Blimey, tell us more please!
Okay, so here's the more:
I've been taking medication for about a year now that it turns out I don't actually need and hey, it carries the side-effect of hair loss. So my hair has been thinning out for quite a while. Thank gods and the maple trees, no one can see that cept me, but lemme tell ya, I am very aware of it and it's freak'n me out big time! I've easily lost half my hair.
Other thing: My hair is currently several shades of blue and green. That's lots of fun and all but it's also a huge mess and I'm tired of doing it. Direct Dyes (as they're called) are supposed to be very safe, but I don't know if I believe that. I know it's mostly the meds. that did this to my hair but still. -- What I mean by "this" is that my hair comes out in gobs when I shampoo it. It's horrifying.
Horrifying.
I can't believe I don't have bald spots and my scalp isn't visible through my hair by now. Thankfully, I had a lot of hair to start with.
So, last Sunday, I put a protein mask in my hair (I'd done so the week before as well) and left it for about 90 minutes. Apparently, they shouldn't be left in that long. I thought you could sleep in those things. Turns out a person's hair can absorb too much protein, which can cause breakage.
K, so, when I rinsed out the mask, there were literally locks of my hair breaking off, sliding down my legs and onto the shower floor. Okay, only two, but the gobs thing as well. It was so surreal, I was thinking, "
This isn't happening. I'm going to be telling someone about this awful dream I had."
K, so, I finish rinsing, wrap in a towel, pick up the handfuls of my hair and take them to my husband, kind of in a state of shock, and just sort of put them in his hands. To which he says, "
Oh my god, honey. Damn." Which was when it really hit me and I started crying.
My husband and son spend some time reassuring me that there are no bald spots and while my hair has thinned, it's not like they can see my scalp, etc.
My husband takes me to a damaged hair specialist (at a salon where the daughter of a former boss works) and she says that it's not nearly as bad as I think, that she wouldn't have known, had I not told her, that it had thinned out so much, that it does need the damaged ends (couple inches of them) trimmed off and also gave me a bunch of other really helpful, comforting information.
K, so, she didn't have time to do my hair that day and when we saw the price list I told my husband I would just look it up on (ta da) YouTube, "How to trim your damaged ends," and do it myself.
But, my daughter, who lives in FL, after hearing all this, Zell's the money for an appt. with this specialist because she wants me to have a good experience and get a good start on regrowing my hair back to health. And cause she's awesome.
I have an appt. tomorrow, Friday, with the Stylist.
Oh, and I'm almost finished weaning off this medicine; freaking yay! One more week.
Sorry for the length. Sheesh, what an odyssey. LOL
