What was your first apartment like?

Mine was in 1972, Queens NYC. It was a tiny NYC apartment, You couldn't opened the fridge, and the oven door at the same time. It had orange crate furniture, a cot, and an aluminum chair. One nice thing about NYC, you can go 'furniture shopping' on trash day. People buy new stuff and throw out the old. You got to be selective, but you can get some decent free furniture. I did.

Mine was a "studio" apartment near a big city. It was pretty small but not as small as yours, fuzzy. Usually around here, a "studio" apartment means a couch that you fold out into a bed; but my apt. had a tiny little area just big enough for a double size bed with a little folding screen you could close. And back then it cost $135 a month which I thought was high back in those days! šŸ˜„

The first I had of my own was a studio apartment in CA., not bad, and I really liked the neighborhood. Only a couple of blocks from the beach. However, it was the first time I'd ever encountered roaches, and had no idea what they were.
It was fully furnished, all utilities included, I think the rent was $300 per month.

Most of my household goods were hand me downs or curbside colonial.

The ratty couch and upholstered chairs were all covered with comforters.

I remember cleaning my place and sitting out on the stoop because I didn’t want to leave butt prints on the freshly laundered furniture covers.

Not much has changed other than the price of my used furniture/antiques.

Those were happy times.

Mine was 1977 and the entire upstairs of an older home. Window A/C in living room only and had to hang a shower curtain at the top of the stairs in winter because the stairway was so long and drafty. I was 23 and don't know how I carried my groceries and laundry up those stairs but I sure did LOL! Hell, I couldn't climb those stairs today much less carry anything!

I've only lived in an apartment twice. I lived in a pretty nice 2-br one for a couple of years when I was in my 40s, and I've lived here in this one for a little over 5 years. I hated apartment living when I was younger, but I don't mind it much now.

The first apartment was located in a 5 city-block area that had a row on both sides of identical 4-unit, 2-br apartment houses. It was abysmal to look at and to live in.

Oh, I just remembered another one - my kids and I lived in a basement apartment when we first moved to Colorado. That one was pretty cool, though.

My first solo apartment was in Zurich. It was one room with a beautiful view. The bathroom was shared by about 4? other rooms. It had no cooking facilities but I bought a small fridge for $50. and a friend gave me a camp stove. I did have a small sink for personal hand washing, but I washed dishes in it. For hot water, I had to click a switch, wait 15 minutes for 5 minutes of hot water.

I only lived in one apt, small 1 bedroom around the corner from my childhood home
What I recall I could fit a 2 chairs ,small sofa, couple of lamps TV& stand ,table in living room My bedroom had bed, lamp,my dresser, small desk The rent was $250 plus electricity/cable
I lived there from '78-'88

First apartment was in a college town in Kent, Ohio. This was the early 1960's ... It was with my husband in an old house that was split into 4 apartments for 4 couples.
We had an upstairs unit that had 4 rooms I think. Don't remember much about the apartment. It wasn't all that great, but I remember having really nice couples around us.

I shared two different 1 bdrm. apts. with my older sister when I first moved to Toronto.
My first apartment alone, was the top floor of an old boarding house. It was an open-plan space with a kitchen and bed-sitting room, also my own sink/toilet .. conveniently across from a subway station. I can't remember what the rent was, but it was discounted when the landlord asked me to do the vacuuming and clean the bathroom. That lasted a short time when the other tenants visitors decided to clog their communal toilet with newspaper - in retaliation, because I put up a "please clean up after using the tub/sink" sign.

I left the newspaper in the toilet, and told the landlord I wouldn't be removing it .. he didn't blame me. I think he had a "talk" with the other tenants. It never happened again.

My first home wasn't an apartment it was an upside down Duplex which was on a Naval Base...

The donstairs had a huge Hallways much bigger than you'd expect for a 2 bed house... and a massive walk in closet, so I kept my daughters' ( she was a newborn).. full size Coach built Carriage pram in there...

There was one bedroom on the ground floor, then Swedish style wooden open slat staircase leading up to the second floor similar to these..

Another large square hallways at the top of the stairs, where one bathrom and toilet.. one master bedroom.. and a livingroom with floor to ceiling and wall to wall windows which let all the light in, on the hottest summer that year for about 50 years... .. and in the livingroom was a glass door which lead into to a fairly small the kitchen just big enough to hold a cooker, fridge and under counter freezer... along with the usual counter space etc.. but very little light in there because it looked out into the surrounding courtyard of 2 storey homes, whereas the big livingroom windows looked out onto a big wide road with an expanse of grass...and some smaller one storey homes
