One morning I when walking our black labrador, Max, I noticed some money lying next to the curb. There wasn't a nearby house and I didn't see any other persons walking. When I got up close I found a $100 bill folded in half. Naturally, I picked it up, and for several days I watched to see if anyone seemed to be looking for anything in that area and asked about it to folks I new in the neighborhood.

When I studied the bill closely I noticed four red characters that to me look like chinese writing. So I went to one of the banks in town and asked them to look at it and tell me if it was legitimate or conterfeit. They never noticed the those odd characters but did hold it under some sort of light and used a marker on it. They told me they weren't sure one way or the other. I put it aside in a notebook and really forgot all about it for something like five or six years.

When trying to find a phone number the other day, there was the mysterious currency once again. I've given our buddy Google a few inquiries and truly believe it is counterfeit due to some of the things I was able to see using a magnifying glass and the things Mr. Google told me to look at. It has been five maybe six years since I found the item and now I'm not really sure what to do with it. I wouldn't think of trying spend it, but I find it to an interesting novelty.

The United States Secret Service has a dual mission: protection and investigations. While they are famously known for protecting the President and other high-level officials, their investigative role, dating back to 1865, focuses on safeguarding the nation's financial systems and infrastructure.

This includes investigating a wide range of financial crimes, not just those involving counterfeit currency, which was their original focus

I've checked several legal sources online, and it appears that possessing counterfeit currency is only illegal if you know it's fake and intend to defraud someone by using it, but possession alone is not a crime.

It was a long time ago when the bank checked it and told you they couldn't be sure one way or the other. Try another bank - or two banks, and if it's good, then use it. If you still aren't sure, trash it because it's not worth the risk.

It's a modest amount of money so, I don't think I would have bothered handing it in at the local police station. If finances were tight, I probably would have spent it but, otherwise, I would have put it in a charity box. If the bank could not identify it as counterfeit then it's probably legit or, at least, reasonable for you to assume it to be.

As you find it interesting, why not frame it?
