When I first heard the term "Rooting for you" I was taken aback

Here in Australia, "Rooting" predominately means sexual intercourse.
Why were so many people saying, "Rooting for you"?
Were these people offering me coitus?
I have since learnt in the US "Rooting for you" means cheering for you, hoping for your success etc

Maybe it is. It has certainly been around all my life. No doubt very much longer.
A quick search shows it has been around since the 1930s, only in Australia though..

Not by me. I am not "Rooting for anyone"

when my son was younger and in a basketball team there was a lady from America whose son was i n same team. She always cheered very enthusiastically - when someone mentioned that to her, she said yes, I always root for the basketball team and the footy team and.......

she stopped when she noticed everyone laughing and later described that sinking feeling when you know you have made a faux pas but have no idea what it is.
