When making a Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Just curious... Lorie says I am the only person she knows that spreads mayo on my sandwich to grill... that you are suppose to use butter... Anyone else??

I've done it both ways... I actually like the mayo better, and I use light mayo, so half the calories & fat.

Mayo has plenty of oil, why not?

I like to sprinkle mine with garlic powder for a bit more flavor.

@RadishRose , been cooking it like that for years now, and prefer it...nev er tried with Miricle Whip... but we eat mayo here... Enjoy...

and...Mayo mixed with ketchup makes a great dipping sauce for those small precooked shrimp.
Just take em by the tail and dip...delicious!

Last time I was on the east coast I got a grilled cheese sandwich with "white cheese" and pineapple.
I would like to make it again but I cant seem to get it right. East Coast people what is "white cheese".
And have you made this sandwich.

I sometimes add yogurt, you know, the little fibre tubs mixed flavours, ...they make a good dip too with the Mayo.

If I think of it, I substitute mayo for the butter. I often add Dijon mustard &/or slices of white onion.
Then, there’s my husband’s sandwich which has nothing on it. Just two slices of brown bread with cheese.

Old Cheddar in block and sometimes use Mayo but prefer lots of butter with just a smidge of ketchup.

I toast the bread first in the toaster, put on cheese, sprinkle with some smoked paprika and nuke till the cheese melts. No frying needed.

I have not tried mayo on my grilled cheese sandwiches but to each their own. I agree with @Aunt Bea ”your sandwich, your rules.”
I usually use brick old cheddar but I’m not too fussy about what cheese I use. Havarti cheese is nice.

Start off with sourdough slices, butter all 4 sides
Cheese, aged English cheddar, if I'm out I'll used shredded mozzarella
One trick I've learned is to keep the sandwich moving in the pan, never burns

Usually deli-sliced American cheese but sometimes cheddar slices.

There are many varieties of white cheese. Mozzarella , havarti, cottage cheese, feta, white cheddar are some of them.

It should be white cheddar, and I use green apple slices, not pineapple.

Usually it’s cheese slices because a Grilled Cheese is when there’s nothing else. If I’m going all out I’ll grate Balderson Extra Old cheddar, white or orange. Maybe a mix of these two.
