It was to encourage women to step into a job left open by a man who enlisted.

Here in Canada it was "The Bren Gun Girl " who worked at Inglis Appliances here in Toronto, making the 303 calibre Bren light machine gun. She was a singer on her off days, with a big swing band orchestra, and later a radio and TV star in the 50's and 60's. JimB.
