When You Know It's Time to Move

As I type this there are the lights from at least three police cruisers, oh sirens in the distance. They're getting back up, oh yaaaay and my dogs are going ape crap. Oh and a fire truck too. Sigh...this neighborhood has changed. Now we have two fire trucks and one police car and more sirens in the distance. This isn't Compton, houses across town go for ridiculous amounts of money.

It's usually the same three houses-
House one and the sons sit on their front steps yelling into their phones at all hours.

House two and they keep to themselves except for the monster security lights and the mother beeping her horn and screaming in Creole.

House three are two adult brothers and a long suffering elderly mother, grand daughter that comes on visitation. Long time residents. The police are regularly there. Oh and every year they have a new huge scary dog. The last one was a Dobie that attacked the Mom's small dog. Disposable dogs for guard duty...bastards.

Yeah, five to ten years I'm ready to pack it up.

Aw, Fur. I'm sorry you're going through this right now. Hugs. No place is perfect, but some are less imperfect than others. It pays to find peace and tranquility in your environment if you can. The furbabies will appreciate it too.

When is it time to move?? When someone gets murdered in the house across the street and everytime a car backfires you think it's a gunshot and you've got 3 kids all under the age of five. This happened to someone I met. I hope she got out of there.

Sadly it only needs one or 2 rotten grapes to infect the whole barrel of wine ....regardless of the quality of the rest of the grapes...!! Such a shame that the place you thought was going to be your nirvana has had these few rotten grapes infecting it..Hope you can find somewhere better..it's not easy to move when you get older, but you do need to be able to live in peace!

I feel your pain. I too live in a neighborhood that has slowly gone down hill. It's a small home my mother lived in before she died. Never thought I would live here very long(2 years) but I also have a condo on the gulf coast and spend some time there. This house has been fine for part time living, but can't stay here forever. The street I'm on is actually not terrible, but the neighborhood as a whole has a lot of undesirables. Nothing like having your windows rattle with the booming music from cars driving by. And my good neighbors are all in their late 80's, so who knows what I will get when they are gone.

I have thought about moving to the coast full time, but don't really want to leave all my friends plus MS is just home. Not really thrilled with looking over my shoulders for a hurricane, which I would probably do if I lived there full time. So I'm kicking around the idea of moving in a newer subdivision just outside of town. A good location, but not cheap. But I won't keep the condo forever so that, along with my current house, will more than offset the cost of what I am looking at.

I guess our situation is not unique. Something that many face if you live in an older neighborhood.

Thank you for the kind words everybody. It's a shame that when my in-laws bought this house it was a lovely neighborhood. They knew the names of everyone for blocks around. But the houses are all originally turn of the century meaning you either rebuild from the inside out or sell it as a fixer upper. Then folks start moving in who park cars on what was once a lawn. Oh and the music, some rap in small doses is okay. Booming out of your speakers while you wash your car makes me want to come over and hurt you.

I'm thinking Jersey shore. Lots of retirement communities and affordable apartments. We need somewhere dog friendly and one floor. But in the meantime it makes you nutty. Last night I was walking home from the store for exercise. Fairly well lit and the young men on the corners don't bother me. But there are drive by's way too close to home. What if someone had a problem with one of these gentlemen and I was in the way? Or the police have someone pulled over who decides they'll take off instead? That's something you learn. Any police action and you stay as far away as you can. Sirens too, always sirens.
