I finally organized mine into a segmented plastic craft box with two layers. I have the reds together, the blues, etc. Not as much fun as the old tin one, but easier to find something.
In Victorian times, it was popular among little girls to have a "button string". They'd collect buttons from relatives and friends and braid them into strings. There was quite a competition to see who would have the longer string.
That reminds me of the chains made of folded chewing gum wrappers we'd make when I was in junior high. The longer, the better.
