Where Was Your Favorite Place to Vacation as a Kid?

We lived in Maine so it was always a vacation there.
We've also enjoyed Maine, over the past 22 years. Most of those years we spent 4 months (2 in the Spring and 2 in the Fall) at our daughter's cottage. Between those stays and 3 moths of winter in Florida, they were enjoyable years.

My avatar is a shot of the cottage with the lake behind it and a retired canoe up front. Fryeburg area in southwestern Maine.

We used to rent a cabin for two weeks on a lake Northern Wisconsin. Usually a different lake each time, which was a wonderful retreat from Chicago. My dad could fish. My sister and I could swim on a sandy beach all day, and my mother enjoyed it too. But those lakes are not the same anymore.

I always wanted to learn how to surfboard, so when I was in San Diego, I had a Marine that was a really good surfer try to teach me. On the fourth day of learning how to surf, we encountered a couple of sharks. The one shark took a hunk out of a girl’s foot just a few feet from us. Later that day, a shark attacked my teacher and I thought “the heck with this.” The Marine told me that they run in spurts. Sometimes you won’t see a shark for weeks. When I saw that girl’s bite, I thought she was very lucky. They saved the foot, but she was in shock. My Marine got off lucky. He just had a big long cut down his arm where he raked his arm on top of the shark’s tooth. I think he only needed a few stitches and a bandage. What surprised me was that the shark attacks didn’t stop the surfers from surfing. They all went back into the water surfing like nothing ever happened.
Wow! I would have been in shock seeing that! I have been to areas (e.g. Australia) where they have barriers around the swimming area so you can swim safely and not get attacked.

My favorite place for our family summer vacations when our parents would rent a cabin on Lake Fairlee,Vermont for about 10 yrs My siblings&I thought it was so peaceful, nice to get away from the city noises for a couple of weeks. We loved to walk up mountain trails to see the spectacular views,go swimming in the lake, play tennis on nearby clay courts, just relax, unwind in the beauty of nature
Whenever I watch movie' On Golden Pond' it reminds me of our vacations in VT

The Arnside & Silverdale area that straddle the Lancashire / Cumbria area. Many holidays there growing up starting in a tent, then a touring caravan then a few static caravans. When we both retired we chose the area as our new home and we’re just 20min away.

I have a few different places that I enjoyed. My dad and uncle owned a home in the mountains of Pennsylvania. That was always fun going up there to go hiking and there was a large lake not too far away where we would fish.

I also liked going to visit my one aunt’s just to be with my cousins. As we got older, we could also get the girls to hang out with. My cousin had horses, so we went horseback riding and there was a big pond with an old apple tree next to it that my uncle put a big tire swing on it and we would swing on the tire and then jump into the pond on hot summer days.

The one summer, my dad did the same thing as 911’s dad did. He drove us across country to California. We didn’t go to Disneyland, but we did go to Hollywood and Beverly Hills. My mom had to go shopping on Rodeo Drive until she saw the prices. We did manage to go out to Malibu and get in the water there and Santa Monica beach or pier or whatever it was called back then. We went to a neat skateboarding company outside of LA and I bought a new board with the newest wheels on it. All the kids back home were jealous because I was faster than they were. It was a Powell Peralta board with ball bearing wheels and Teflon coated linings. My dad handed it to me and said “Merry Christmas.” I think it was over a $100 even back then. My dad was into cars, so we visited a lot of speed shops out there. Dad dropped my sister and mom off at some big mall with a Spanish name before we went speed shop hunting.

I thought California was great, but my dad said he would never live there. Too much traffic and too much smog. We ate at a restaurant in either Redondo Beach or Oxnard. I could never remember. Some old movie star that my mom and dad knew walked in. I remember seeing him, but forget the name. They wouldn’t go over and talk to him. They told me they weren’t supposed to bother them.

That trip was 3 weeks long and we all said the same thing. Best vacation ever.

For many people in the UK born during or just post war, holidays were often out of the question. Rationing was still in force and few households had a car. The expression "holiday at home" was often used (replaced by that horrible word 'staycation'). At least Britain still had railways and seaside holidays were popular. Relatively few people travelled abroad.

I remember trips to places like Ayr and Girvan (Hollydolly will know these) or to relatives in Forfar (E.Scotland). Sadly many of these places have see better days and now people travel abroad for sun & sand.

I was lucky, we went on vacation every year. Summer and winter vacations, plus other activities (hiking, city trips, sports events,...). I was always happy to see new places and meet other people.

Traveling really gave me a lot. It was my driving force for school, education and work - I also wanted to travel a lot in life. At some point you have to pay for your own travel and your parents don't pay for it anymore :)

Travel was and is very important to me. I find it incredibly expands your own horizon. When you're on other continents for the first time, it also makes the world smaller. Suddenly other countries don't feel so far away.
