Which would you rather listen to?

Would you rather hear songs you like, favorites, sung by someone okay or mediocre voice,
OR hear songs you don't care for by a singer with an excellent voice?

I am mixed on this, but usually I prefer the former. I have heard a lot of both by street
musicians. The same for classical orchestras. I'd much rather hear music I like even if the
orchestra is not the best or amateur. I am not so choosy.

Songs I don't care for may wind up being sung with a different arrangement that sounds much better than the original. I've seen it happen. Hearing music I like that doesn't sound right because the singer can't sing or the band doesn't sound up to par only annoys my sensibilities. So I guess I'll say hearing songs I don't care for by an excellent singer. Perfect example of that...my friend Hunter Hayes (of N.J., not the young country singer) always makes cover tunes sound better than the originals IMO.

I find "excellent voice" to be relative. What constitutes an excellent voice for one song is not necessarily good for another. "Excellent voice" is also subjective . . . subject to personal tastes.

Overall, I agree with others here. If I don't like a song, I don't like it regardless of who sings it.

Also, a "new" arrangement of a familiar song can often be irritating. Is that a symptom of my advancing years?

Excellent voice may be technical and objective. Ability to sing high and lowest notes and having a genuine feel for the song as if every word matters. A personal touch. Or a close copy of the original. Versatility. I hate opera can't stand it but I know they have excellent voices technically.
I have heard hundreds of voices. Most are in the middle range
To me lower voices are easier to hear and high sopronos become annoying

What about you

Being "of a certain age", my tastes were heavily influenced by the singers if the '40s into the early'60s. Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Perry Como, Dinah Shore, Andy Williams, etc. They invariably had a wide vocal range, excellent voice control and all lyrics were clearly enunciated. Still, I can think of any number of songs I enjoy that that type of singer shouldn't attempt.
