Where exactly was it filmed ? I have heard a number of "valley towns "mentioned over the years. I got a kick out of the Pharoes as a car club name. The 34 coupe and the black 55 Chevy were/are both iconic California car styles. I winced when they rolled that 55 into a ditch. Bobby Lemat didn't really go far in his career, after that movie. On the other hand Harrison Ford and that red headed kid did OK. GRIN.

Well I thought it was filmed in Modesto which is near my hometown of Stockton.
But I just googled and got this reply ...
American Graffiti was primarily filmed in Petaluma, California, with key scenes shot on Petaluma Boulevard North, D Street, and Washington Street .

BTW I think the sound track with the Wolfman is awesome

Yes the AG sound track is one CD that I play in my car when driving long distance. I all ways remember the movie's advertising tag line....Where were you in 62? I was 18, had just bought a 54 Ford with a 312 V8 with a Paxton super charger on it. Fast cars, and faster girls .

Week end dances were at the top of my " To Do " list. Making memories and taking pictures with my Kodak 110 camera. JIM

The 55 Chevy was not destroyed, often times a substitute car is used for the crash scene. This was the second film featuring that 55 Chevy, you can also see it in an earlier film titled "Two-Lane Blacktop" with James Taylor. In this movie it was not the shining black paint like in American Graffiti, it was gray primer. My understanding is that it's in a private collection now.

"It sold for $159,500 in 2015 at a Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale."

Yes, it was filmed in Petaluma. I lived and worked there for a number of years and have driven those streets many, many times.
This was my '55' chevy back in the day.
