Why can older people get away with being eccentric?

I know a woman in her 90s that attends the same church I do. One time at the after service coffee fellowship, I was telling her about a recipe I wanted to make. After describing the ingredients, she gave forth with a loud "YUCK!" Everybody laughed. Why can really old people do this and people think it's funny, but if someone younger does the same thing, people are offended?

I don't think her YUCK was eccentric at all, no matter how loud she said it.
