Why did we think those hair styles were so cool?

Yup. In the 50s I was a kid with a "crew cut". And to be cool, you had to put that petroleum jelly on the tuft of forehead hair. You can tell when the pic was taken by the style of hair by the style of hair. Why did we think those hair styles were so cool?

I'll take a guess that those pics were taken in early 60s. I'm not sure, but the lady's hair style was called a 'beehive"? The guy's hair was what a cool dude wore then. The same men's hair style would scream "establishment" in latter last part of the 60s.
What do you all think?

At age 75, I still can "emulate" the old DA haircut...when I let my hair grow long enough. However, I usually keep it cut too short to need all that Goo to look like I did decades ago. I'm just glad I have hair, at my age. I've noticed that the latest trend among many of the young guys is to have the sides of their heads shaved, with a "mop" extending on the crown of their heads....almost a wide Mohawk. I guess each generation does it's thing.

At 81 I remember well all the different hairstyles I wore. Now with zero hair on top I don't have any options. I started HS with a ducktail in '51. Pegged pants, suede shoes, Leather jacket....oh yeah, I was cool.
