Why do I need H&R Block to file an online tax return?

Got to do my taxes, today. Paying taxes on my vast fortune takes about 10 minutes. But it does irk the hell out of me that I have to pay some tax service to email the IRS my tax return. Why can't I just send it directly to the IRS? If I owe taxes, I don't send the money to H&R Block, the IRS takes credit cards, so why can't it take my return?

Here in Canada, we can and do file our annual income tax returns to Revenue Canada for free using their NetFile program. No third party is required. Link. File your taxes online: Understand NETFILE(CRA) - Canada.ca

My Wife uses a computer program that we upgrade each year from Turbo Tax to do the actual calculations, once we have received all of our income and pension information slips. An hour is the usual time required to complete and forward the CRA return by electronic means. If we are owed any refund it comes in about 2 weeks, by direct deposit into our bank accounts. Jimb.
