Police: Girl, 5, dies after being thrown from Florida bridge

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — A 25-year-old Tampa man faces a first-degree murder charge after throwing his 5-year-old daughter off a bridge on the approach to the Sunshine Skyway early Thursday morning.
A St. Petersburg police officer who was heading home just after midnight tried to stop a PT Cruiser that passed him going about 100 mph. The officer said the car stopped on the approach to the Skyway bridge and he saw a man get out and throw a child over the rail into Tampa Bay. The officer said the man then got back into his car and drove south.

Rescue crews arrived and pulled the little girl from the water. But Phoebe Jonchuk died at 2:44 a.m. at a hospital. Her father, John Jonchuk, was stopped by Manatee Sheriff's deputies about 30 minutes later.


He was returned to St. Petersburg for questioning and was being booked into the Pinellas County Jail on Thursday morning.
St. Petersburg police spokeswoman Yolando Fernandez said rescuers tried to resuscitate the child.

Jonchuk also faces charges of aggravated assault with a motor vehicle on a law enforcement officer and aggravated fleeing and eluding police.
 

I'd be curious to see "why". I wonder if in this butt hole's mind he thought he was teaching the kid a lesson. I think his actions are part of impulse control problem filled society ie instant gratification.

This guy would be a perfect candidate for ole sparky.

A friend is saying it was probably drugs. I don't care how high this thing was there were probably existing character issues.
 

He told the Judge he doesn't want a Defense Lawyer, "God will take care of it for me". Gee, sounds like he saying "God told me to do this".
 
I'm not sure how society can completely prevent things like this from happening.. However, It DOES sound like this was a mentally ill person.. If indeed he did "hear" voices telling him to do this, he is schizophrenic. One thing that Society CAN do to prevent SOME of these tragedies is to refund our mental health facilities. That funding has been cut by austerity programs and budget balancing on the backs of the most vulnerable people in our society... many times to provide tax cuts and perks for Corporations and the wealthy. In my area 2 out of the 3 State funded long term mental institutions have closed in the last 10 years. Where did all these people go? Well, some are in our prison system... the others are out on the street without their medication. Just a thought as the OP wonders what we may be able to do.
