Why the consternation over Sharks?

On Cape Cod for the last few years we have had a large population of Great White Sharks. We also have the largest seal population on the east coast which is what attracts them. We also have a lot of tourists that like to swim there. They all share the 40 mile long coastline of the Cape Cod National Seashore. A few people have been injured and one person killed but the sharks attract far more tourists than they scare away.

I saw Jaws, that's my only experience with sharks.
Never seen an ocean either, so maybe that's why I haven't seen one.
A friend of mine was attacked by a hammerhead years and years ago, but it just hit him in his air tank.
He got back to the boat like an Olympic swimmer.
