Why the fuss over "Royals"?

The way you stated that Roman Catholics were avoided like the plague, makes it sound like there’s something wrong with their DNA. Wasn’t this selective process mainly due to the ‘religious’ aspect of it?
Now of course, the royals CAN marry Roman Catholics if they choose, as far as my understanding but I could be wrong.

Yes, they can marry Roman Catholics, but it takes them out of the succession to the throne.

I'm a Yank. I do seem to think that the "King/Queen" is the head of the Anglican Church??? So I guess being a Catholic might cause a problem to becoming sovereign. I believe that under Charles, and his heirs, the Head of State and head of the Anglican Church will be two entities. It will be difficult to be a religious leader in an increasingly secular and religiously diverse nation.

True !!

Because the British monarch is head of the Church of England, which is the established church, British law bars Catholics from succeeding to the throne.
The Succession to the Crown Act 2013 allowed heirs to the throne to marry Catholics, among other changes. However, the law still stipulates that the acting British sovereign mustn't be a Catholic. Catholics have been barred from the English throne since the Act of Settlement 1701.

Thank you all. I wasn’t sure but I figured there was a logical reason. It makes sense.
Anglican. That’s the religion I was born into, being originally from England.

I can like or dislike any aspects of life I choose just like you or anybody else Laurie. I certainly don’t need ‘your’ permission and I’ll walk into any field and discuss whatever I choose, thank you.

This is a public forum, that is your prerogative, just as it is mine.

Though I rarely comment on your head of state, I feel free to comment on mine!

So far as Roman Catholics are concerned, ny apologies if my choice of words caused offence, such was not my intention.

I only meant that no Royal could marry a Roman Catholic, and while, as has been pointed out, they can now do so, they can only do so with the permission of the sovereign.

The reason they have been regarded with such suspicion is that in the UK the greatest earthly power, exercised under God, is the sovereign. Roman Catholics believe that this power lies with the Pope.

Remember how many of our wars have been against catholics, and they have also fomented the odd rebellion and plot!

it gets tiresome sometimes ' but blame the papers they love it --sells news -- so at the moment we have the megan saga ;;;; and harry ' they are not perfect but rich and royal'
all i can say it brings in ££££££££££ to the UK.

Yep! We’re good. You certainly are allowed your opinion :sentimental:

Don't blame the papers.

They only print what people will pay to read, otherwise they go out of business.

It's kind of ridiculous. The only opinion I ever have on this topic (or actually any other) is when someone posts about it. We influence each other on the internet way more that we admit. Otherwise not really caring one way or the other. Then all of a sudden we need to come up with our opinion and then needing to defend it.
