Why would my county tax bill be sent to a bank?

County taxes are due in January. I did receive a tax bill for my old house which I turned over to the buyer's attorney at the closing. I emailed the local tax collector and she said, "The county had your bill going to the bank for escrow that is why you did not receive it."

I don't undrestand that ESCROW thing. I thought that only applied to houses that are mortgaged. I paid cash.

Your taxes are prorated, for the months you still had possession of your property, after that the new owners are responsible for the remaining year of the amount you already paid, and you get that amount back at close of escrow.

The previous owner probably had a mortgage with an escrow account.

Most likely the tax records weren't updated in time to reflect the change of ownership and bills were sent to the bank as usual.

You should be able to check this by looking at your closing documents for the new house to see if a check was cut to satisfy a mortgage on the house.
