There are currently many wild fires in Montana. They have caused evacuations, road closures and have destroyed many structures. One such structure was in Glacier Natl Park, the Sperry Chalet has been burned and the scenic Lake Macdonald lodge has closed early due to smoke.
So sorry to hear of all the fires in Montana. Very sad. I live in northern CA where the are also fires. In fact at the school where I work, we have kept the kids inside for recess the past 2 days because of all the smoke.

Just drove through your area on our way home from Oregon yesterday,Granny B. Oregon was even worse-we never saw the sun, moon or stars the entire week we were there. I think their fires have been burning longer though. We don`t currently have any fires burning here in Lake County but we still have a whole lotta smoke!
It's been really hazy here in Colorado, I think it's from the fires in Montana, Idaho, Utah, etc. I hope you're not too close to an active fire there Deucemoi.
Every year, it seems the Western states have to contend with major wildfires. Any drought conditions, coupled with a lightning strike, or careless outdoor burning, seems to result in thousands of acres going up in smoke. Plus, so much of the Western forestland is Evergreen trees, and those things go up like a can of gasoline whenever fire occurs.
As the NY Times so poetically described it, "California is in a state of perpetual warfare with Mother Nature - which usually wins."
LOL!!
I have a friend who does base camp logistics for PG&E, the main Northern CA utility. Hellish conditions - terrible heat/smoke in summer; wind/rain/lightning in winter - and has told us some hair-raising anecdotes that make one realize how fragile the power grid can be.
So much of it is dependent upon power stations in remote areas. A surprising number of them are underground, but not buried deep enough (it wasn't thought necessary "back in the days" for the older nodes). Damage one of those, and the power for several cities will go out and STAY out for weeks until new lines and nodes can be built.
She worked the Big Sur fire earlier this year in 2017 (Soberanes). Told us the fire came within less than a hundred feet of the underground station that sends power to the cities of Salinas, Carmel, Monterey and Pacific Grove. Those cities came that close to losing power for months.
So sad about all the fires everywhere. Air quality is bad and we smell smoke though we are miles from the fires. Earlier today we were up to 216("very unhealthy"), and now it's down to 173. Grants Pass, OR is up to 315("Hazardous"). Here's a link to a national air quality website: https://airnow.gov/index.cfm?action=airnow.main
Here's an air quality image for Shasta Co. for today:
out to the west there is a 10640 mountain about 8 air miles i have not seen for that month also.. however today the smoke lifted and i could see the outline.....forecast is trending along the same for the next week at least. unhealthy air quality alerts for most the cities in the area..
