Apparently it was believed that they "wolfed" nutrients from the soil when the opposite is true. It's a nitrogen-fixation plant.
 

Not sure what you're talking about. I tried looking up "wolf plant" on my Bing and can't find anything labeled as such. Is there another name for it?

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, they were named "lupines" (from Latin lupus for wolf) because it was believed they wolfed down the nutrients.
