Woman is gored by a bison at Yellowstone, the second incident reported this week, park officials say

A woman visiting the Yellowstone National Park was gored by a bison, the second incident of an animal injuring a park visitor this week, according to the National Park Service (NPS).

Yellowstone National Park said on Thursday that a Pennsylvania woman, 71, was gored by a bull bison on Wednesday, just one day after another visitor was injured by a bison at the park. The attack on the woman was the third reported incident this year of a visitor getting too close to a bison and the animal responding to the perceived threat by goring the person, the park service said.

I just saw a segment on The Smithsonian Channels show “Aerial America” and it highlighted Yellowstone Park. During the episode, it showed a small tour bus that takes people on short trips through the park and when they see a herd of Elk, Bison, etc., they will stop and allow their passengers to get off the bus to take pictures.

During the video, they show a tour bus stopping for the passengers to get off and take pictures. The announcer then states, “Sometimes people want to get too close to the animals and even though they have been warned to stay back from the animals, they will ignore the warning and approach the animals and there have been times when a bull will charge, or a female who has a calf will also charge.”

There are many hiking paths through the park with many warning signs of animals and their ability to charge. Dangerous animals such as; Grizzly Bears, Bison, Elk and others were mentioned. Also included are Rattle Snakes.

I've been to Yellowstone several times and in all the time I have spent there only one bison has noticed me, and it just grunted.

When I worked at the zoo you'd be amazed at how many people would try to get beyond the barriers to get closer to the wild animals. Some folks are just stupid.

I was always told remember 'these are WILD animals' as in DANGEROUS. It's not hard to learn or understand. Simple concept.

It is shocking to me that people would be allowed to get anywhere close to these animals. They would be amazing to see but no one should be allowed close to them. They are wild animals and do what they would if they thought they were in danget. Just because they are not in a zoo setting does not mean they are okay to approach. If you see a rattlesnake in the wild are you just going to walk up to say hello just for a picture? The problem is not the animal but the human.
