Woman killed by malfunctioning ottoman bed

A 39-year-old British woman was killed when a malfunctioning ottoman bed fell on her neck and asphyxiated her, a coroner’s report said.

Helen Davey, who lived in northeastern England and ran a beauty salon, died in June as she “was leaning over the storage area of an Ottoman-styled ‘gas-lift’ bed,” coroner Jeremy Chipperfield said in his report, released last week.

Ottoman beds have a base that can be raised – usually using gas-lift hydraulics – to access a storage space underneath. They are a popular choice for householders wanting to keep bedding or unseasonal clothes out of sight.

The mattress platform on Davey’s bed fell unexpectedly, “trapping her neck against the upper surface of the side panel of the bed’s base,” Chipperfield explained. “Unable to free herself, she died of positional asphyxia. One of the two gas-lift pistons was defective.”

Sad enough but somehow the bizarre manner of death makes this even more sad.

Of course this is tragic. But when I saw the news for the first time, I admit I laughed. What a way to go. Just crazy how dangerous our world is. :D

I have an Ottoman bed.. in fact I had 2... one of them the gas struts stopped working , and trying to lift the mattress and upper apart of the bed was near on impossible...

I got rid of that bed.. and I'm looking to get rid of the Queen ottoman bed that I sleep in.

The bed is fantastic for storage, but eventually this bed also will lose pressure in the gas struts and i won't be able to lift it to access anything....and I am always very concerned when I go under the bed to retrieve anything..I on't put my whole top half of my body in if I can help it in case the things drops on me..it never has, but there's gonna potentially be a first time..

I'm really looking to buy a Non ottoman for next time...

When do we get the next hand-wringer over a single freak accident?

I'm betting on "Man steps on Lego barefoot, ends up plunging out the window falling 85 stories to crash through the roof of a busload of tourists."
