I know a woman with quite serious dementia who lives locally, and needs quite a lot of care, (she's bad enough to be unable to remember anyone other than her children's name for five minutes).
The point I wish to make about her is what is left of her mind, (both good and bad unfortunately)?
The good outweighs the bad, so that's great, but in an irritable mood she's definitely a handful to deal with at times, (even this can be funny, just to hear the things she'll drag up about her children, though not so great when you cop it yourself!
).
On the very good side is her appreciation for any help she receives, almost overwhelming in fact, maybe reflecting insecurity sometimes I know. Obviously she was well brought up, and has been a surviver following her mother dying fairly young, so a tough life and her father bringing her up. Her marriage seems to have been okay, though its hard to tell exactly, and maybe he was domineering, and he died maybe twenty years ago, (she still thinks he's alive sometimes).
As an example of what may await a good many of us it is a bit scary, if we're even as good!
.
If I meet her I try to bring up things from her past, where she used to live etc. and this does seem to trigger memories, but they're hard to make sense of, as sometimes she appears to think they're still in the here and now, if its people, or her memories are.
There must be a good many in worse situations, so what should we all think, maybe make the best of what we have today, because of what may well be waiting for us round the corner(?).
