....and scientists say it's because their body clocks run six minutes quicker

Women really do sleep worse than men, a study shows.

And scientists reckon it's because their body clock runs about six minutes quicker.

This means they're out of sync with their environment, which plays havoc on their internal wiring that tells their brain when they should feel sleepy.

An all-female team of experts stationed at the universities of Harvard, Stanford and Southampton reviewed dozens of academic papers published in the last decade on the poorly-understood 'sleep gap' that exists between men and women.

Many used actigraphs, digital wrist-worn devices similar to Apple watches or Fitbits, which monitor heart rate and sleeping patterns.

Results showed that women were almost 60 per cent more likely to experience insomnia.

They rate their sleep quality lower than men and complain about getting more bad nights.

Men, meanwhile, get less restorative, deep sleep than women and are more likely to be night owls. Additionally, they were more likely to have sleep apnoea.

Deeper experiments also revealed there were differences between the sexes in terms of the speed of their body's in-built clock, or circadian rhythm, which sets the rhythm of our lives.

When it comes to sleep, the body reacts to environmental cues to drop our core temperature in the hours before getting some shut-eye to get our body ready to sleep.

Internally, the body also secretes more melatonin, a hormone that helps send us to sleep.

Women DO sleep worse than men, scientists say

This comes as no surprise to me, Hols .. I've had insomnia for all of my life. It was a real issue over the years. Now that I don't have to keep to a schedule, it's great that I could have a nap or two through the day.

I can relate to much of what is written in the article, including the RLS (restless leg syndrome).

Good article!

Same ..same, Pinks... and my husband snored like a train, so he was perfectly able to get sleep all night, and he'd wonder why I was so tired the next day

Compared to the life I led and the schedule I had as a pilot, my wife sleeps like a baby every night from 10-6. Me, I sleep whenever I get a chance. Thirty-three years of flying crazy hours caused my circadian rhythm to get screwed up.

I was married a few times and my wives had children. Also had a few girlfriends in the past. They always slept peacefully and content. I've never experienced a woman with sleep problems.

Not my wife...she can go to sleep within a minute or two from when she closes her eyes. She sleeps hard and seldom wakes up until it gets light in the room. Not me....I seldom get to sleep after I get in bed, takes an hour or more. Then I never sleep till 7am. Usually, I wake up between 3am and 4am. It is then difficult for me to get back to sleep as I feel rested when I wake up.

Sometimes I can and sometimes I cannot get back to sleep. Yes, and at times during the day I can get sleepy, more now that I am retired. I have never taken any medications to sleep...but I have tried everything else. I avoid taking naps as it would make my sleeping at night worse. Multiple doctors have told me to take pills, but I prefer not to...

I guess if it gets worse, I may have to!

I slept really well until 3 years ago. However, I would wake up quickly if one of my kids was crying or calling for me when they were little. For the last few years I can’t sleep longer than 90-120 minutes without waking up. Usually I can fall back to sleep but not always.

Everyone in my family developed problems with sleeping in their senior years. My two older siblings can’t sleep longer than 6 hours.

I have rarely had a problem going to sleep. My boyfriend though, rarely gets any sleep unless he takes a nap during the day. He was truck driver so could be the crazy hours he worked in the past affected him now. Though it has been many years since he was on that schedule.
