A runner/'sprinter' from Somalia ran the slowest time ever in the womens 100 meter dash at the World University games. Revealed afterward that she was placed on the team by her uncle and did not have to qualify. She has no international profile in track. Her time was almost 22 seconds. The US womens qualifying time is 11.15 seconds.

At first I thought OK Somalia, impoverished country, political turmoil etc. But then read she was a government official's niece.

Too bad, Africa has had some world class runners track and field over the decades from when I used to watch the Olympics. Hope she's not tormented for this. Somali government sports officials should be ashamed.

The poor woman is probably suffering the biggest embarrassment of her life right now. Way to go Uncle. Make your niece a laughing stock.

Reminds of a time my buddy paid for me to run in an open invitational college track meet in the one mile run. Running dressed like a tourist, I got lapped by the winning runners! Big difference between running and jogging!

Reminds me of the movie Eddie the Eagle, based on the true story about a guy who managed to find a spot in Olympic Ski Jumping representing England, which had no ski jumping team at all. He was not a ski jumper and never made a jump in his life, until he managed to qualify because England never had any qualification standards for ski jumping as a baseline. His performance on all his tries were flat out dismal, but he was well received by the spectators for his grit. He got more positive attention from the press than the actual skiers. But he didn't have any help from politicians, and everything he failed at accomplishing, was all through his own doing and hard work.

On the surface this story would be sad for the girl, but actually since this event went viral everyone in the world knows her name: Nasra Ali Abukar. She is in the spotlight~center stage in the Worldwide media. Does anyone know the name of the winner of that 100 meter race?

15 seconds of fame, that's more that any average person could hope for. Perhaps such recognition might bring future benefits....?
