Neophyte (noun) - a person new to something; a religious convert; novice; beginner.

The training coordinator looked skeptically at the group of neophytes under his tutelage.

Someone when I started a new job used that term. They did not use it in a derogatory way. But I had to ask them what it meant. I had never heard of it.
