Vassal : historically a person granted the use of land, in return for rendering homage, fealty, and usually military service.

Word vassal fits right into present day property taxes, etc.

Feudal land ownership didn't end until 2000-2004 in Scotland. Of course, by then the Vassal didn't have to pay homage or do military service, but they did pay rent or "feu duty". Today, the Vassal owns the land outright.

In a modern sense my ex husband would have been classed as a Vassal, due to gaining Maried quarter accommodation for us, for serving Queen and country in the British Royal Navy
