Working with foreign nationals - Amusing encounters.

I worked in a Japanese owned company for eight years, and for the most part it was a rewarding experience. We had many amusing encounters that showed they were just as interested in learning about our culture as I was about theirs. On one occasion I was asked about the our tithing in church. I explained how we came about the 10% donation custom. To confirm his understanding he then said, "So it is a God tax." Over the years my amusement about this understanding still lingers. That particular man and I became extremely good friends and now after close to thirty years we stay in touch.

At one time I worked with a guy from Tokyo, one from Bombay and another from Madrid. Sometimes at lunch we would play a card game in Spanish where you made bids by rolling out dry beans. Our Spanish was terrible but it was a hoot. They were all visitors who returned to their respective countries after a couple or years but it was great getting to know them.
