In summer 1973, Nationwide reporter Martin Young paid a visit on the tiny hamlet of Egton Bridge, on the Yorkshire Moors. There, the great and the good of the gooseberry world were assembling for the world gooseberry growing championships.
That year’s big question was whether the reigning champion could be dethroned by an exciting young upstart – his own son. He'd have a serious job on his hands – his old man was a first-rate gooseberry grower, having produced the renowned "white gooseberry" winner of 1952, the greatest gooseberry across the globe, still spoken about with awe.
