Would you ban building homes in a pristine area to protect the environment?

I would support banning building homes in pristine areas. But as we can see they will be built in these places anyway. Money speaks very loudly you know.

Austin is destroying everything that made it a great place to live, by developing every square inch of land. Although we have some of the most strict environmental protection guidelines, here, builders pay their way around them, and I have a feeling that there are lots of under the table deals to clear the way for destroying the land. I, personally, came upon only one such deal, but it was disturbing: This billionaire had compromised his Heritage Trees (large protected trees) during a remodel job. I was supposed to monitor the remediation efforts. Suddenly, my plan disappeared, and I was told to back off, for good. When I called the tree department, everyone played stupid. Overnight, here, forested tracts disappear, and, in just a few weeks, houses spring up, ready to be sold for horribly inflated prices. Truly a crappy scene, here in Austin.

I read what you were saying about leprosy and never heard aboit this. I looked this up to learn more about it only to find that it was us that gave leprosy to the armadillos! I dont know for a fact if this is true but I sure wouldnt doubt it.

Where I used to live was a brook. Most of the time it was a small stream, but in March/April with the snow melt, it always overflowed its banks. There is a house that was built ON the brook. Yup, on one side of a basement wall was the brook, on the other side was the house's cellar. So this guy got flooded out each year. And every year, he was on TV after getting washed out, saying, "Of course, I'm going to rebuild". Finally some insurance company said , "No, you're not". So yeah, it dumb to re build in a flood plain, year after year.

I agree!

There are some places it would be foolish to build. Floodplane being one of them. Were I looking for a building lot or acreage I'd want to see the latest flood control elevations _and_ study a Google Earth image of the area. Also some countys map soil coverage and distribution. Their vegetative maps give a broad hint to what you can expect.

We are just like rabbits- procreating away. We are chopping down entire forests ever second. We are killing off most of our wildlife to build homes. So the question is: Would you ban building homes in a pristine area to protect the environment?

Well, as we so often see.... in humanity....give'em an inch, and they'll take a mile.

I would support such measures, with strict guidelines !!

Our friend Gary lives [in the woods] but he seems to have done so in a very responsible,un-intrusive way. It appears he did not ask nature to get the hell out of his way. He IMO [blended] in with it. Again opinion, but that is entirely different than "development" of an entire area......or even building a gargantuan spread, with swimming pools. tennis courts, etc. That....I would like to stop. But that....is being very selective, and of course would be challenged.

Probably better?...to leave it as it is, and perhaps challenge each case individually as they occur.

rgp, yer too kind
But right on
Couldn’t say it better myself

I’m totally agin raping the land

We have called our place ‘the gentle build’

No digging

No tree falling

No disruption of what nature has taken centuries to form

Matter of fact, tear our cabin and shop down, very little time would elapse before you wouldn’t know we’d been here

I so love the critters
I wouldn't disturb them for nothin'
We are their guests

Oh, I’ve been a hunter
But no longer feel the need
Haven’t gone that hungry in a very long time

Don’t get me wrong. I still hunt, but it’s with the Nikon now

So, yes, we live in a pristine area
But it’s a bit rugged
So, no real human pressure
No developers

Matter of fact, it seems pretty much a nonissue in regard to building in pristine areas

Unless a resort is considered

That’s when I get the artillery out

That is why we have state and national parks.

I live next to an area of protected wilderness where no development is allowed, ever, under any circumstances. The land was donated in the 1800's by the wealthy family who owned the acreage with the stipulation that it was to be kept pristine and undeveloped and used exclusively for the recreation and enjoyment of residents of the communities which abutted it, in perpetuity. (These people were ahead of their time.) Over the years my city has tired to build houses on some of the property. No go. Then the state wanted to turn the land into a state park cuz it's that big and beautiful. Again. No go. I'm glad I live here and it is possible to prevent development of pristine woodlands.

After seeing what happened in warm weather tourist states during the building boom absolutely support strict regulation if not a ban. Over building has caused many environmental related problems.
