Would You Buy A Self Driving Vehicle?

For me there is no way I would ever trust a self driver. I like the act of controlling the vehicle. I am 70 and have been driving for 56 years without a wreck.

I can't wait!!!

noooooo i would not buy one --they might be ok on a open highway but not in city driving

No, I don't like the idea of the self-driving cars, I understand there's already been accidents because of them and at least one death. Guess i don't trust computers.

Not really but maybe if it went backwards in a straight line and could parallel park I might consider it. I never could do either very well. These days I will walk a mile before I'd try parallel parking.

Breezy, I've been watching this idea evolve. There have been a couple of accidents with test models, but no loss of life or serious injuries. The design team found the problem.

When the bugs are worked out, the driverless car will be used only on roads where all features; traffic lights, signs, speed limits, etc; are synced with the cars. If the technology proves safer for drivers, pedestrians and bike riders, it will start going national. ..or anyway, that's the plan.

At the moment, no. I'd want them to get all the bugs out first and that takes time. But I'd get one before quitting driving. What would the pricetag on such a vehicle be?

I have stated before here my experience in a self driving car and in that one hour time I felt safer then if I was in a car with someone else driving so I have no issues with the concept. What I have an issue with is "buying" a self driving car. Waymo (Alphabet/Google division) is running a pilot program here in parts of the Valley for people to have the self driving cars come pick them up when they need them. For now it is a free program but I'm sure that will change soon. I think Uber is doing the same thing in Scottsdale. Anyway, if there comes a day when I can have a self driving car come pick me up to do the things that I need to do and the fees outweighs the cost of owning an actual car then I will be all for it.

As far as the safety factor goes, self driving cars have been on the road in my area for a couple of years now and there has been no deaths or major accidents caused by the car. Compare that to the number of accidents here on a daily basis by cars driven by humans. I'm not saying that in the future accidents would not happen but I would feel safer out with a self driving car compared to someone driving a car who might be drunk, distracted by a text message, changing the radio station, eating, applying makeup, turning their attention to the back seat for a second to make sure their kids are OK, or trying to outrun a yellow light.

There's an article in today's paper about a pedestrian just being run over and killed by a self-driving vehicle. No way would I get one.
