Both. I think everyone's got a politician who's religious views outweighs his IQ. We have. So the gay thing. ho hum

But the French attitude to sex and politics. I agree with the journo, and liked this passage.

To begin with, I think the French view of sex and life is essentially right and ought to be universally applicable: Sex with children or by force is wrong, and the rest is just the human comedy, unfolding, as it will. Puritanism is a sin against human nature, and the worst of it is that puritanism is the most leering and prurient of world views. Far from wanting to keep sex in the private sphere, the puritans can't wait to drag it out in public. Puritans are the least buttoned-up people in the world. They can't wait to pin a scarlet A for adultery on someone's clothing, or hold a public humiliation ritual.

It's a shame some politicians, otherwise quite good at being politicians, were scuttled by a chamber maid or passing dollybird. Pretty silly really.
We pay them to run the Country, we pay an accountant to run our finances but we don't spy on the accountant and demand to have a say in who he sleeps with. If it doesn't interfere with their ability to do the job they're paid for then I don't see where it's anyone else's business.
But the 'puritans' won't agree.

The French attitude appears to be so different from the US, where the politians appear to be scrutinised with a magnifying glass.
look at the Italians, with Belusconi ...and still they don't get rid if him completely..

Update.....the UKIP councillor has been suspended
Belusconi is back!

All politicians the worldwide are all cut from the same moldy mold. It's called globalization . . .
