Your favorite ethnic food

Dear friend's child was married this w/e to a wonderful Indian/African gentleman, and because of his heritage (75% of the guests were of similar heritage) the food that was served buffet style was new to me. I love all kinds of ethnic food so it was a real treat! A couple of funny moments...there was a large urn on the table with cups next to it that dispensed what I thought was something to drink. After taking a hefty sip, I realized it was some kind of dressing  Ron put what looked like a fried chicken patty on his plate, along with some meatballs and other meats. After taste testing, he realized that it wasn't meat...it was sweet and doughy, delicious but completely unexpected!

I enjoyed that entire meal SO MUCH!! The tastes and textures were very different, exciting and unexpected, and it made me realize how generally bored I am with regular food. I guess that's why we tend to frequent our favorite Japanese restaurant when we go out more than anyplace else. I also love chinese and thai food, Indian and greek food. Not a fan of Mexican food or tex mex..at least not the food that's served in restaurants. My oldest married a mexican woman and the first time I had HER cooking, I was hooked!!! She said true mexican food bears NO resemblance to what's served in restaurants! Man is that ever true!

What about you, what are some of your favorite ethnic foods?

My favorite ethnic food is Hungarian because that’s what I grew up on and cooked for most of my married life.

After that I don’t really have a favorite...I like all ethnic foods and there isn’t anything I won’t try...at least once.

There is an Ethiopian restaurant near me and Ive gone a few times....food was delicious and although I wasn’t crazy about the spongy looking bread that’s used instead of silverware ...thinks it’s called injera....it was tasty dipped in the various dishes and sauces.

Normally we'll go to a Vietnamese restaurant at least once a month for roast duck with a side of fried rice and stir fried greens of some sort.....probably our favorite place to dine out together.

Tex-Mex is alright but I like real Mexican food and there is a mom and pop hole in the wall joint not that far away that I like.....mama doesn't like going there because it's in a pretty rough neighborhood so I normally end up going alone when I get the craving for real Mexican food and other than me it's very rare to see a another gringo in the place.

What Ive never tasted except for maybe Fish and chips is British food. Never had Yorkshire pudding or something that Holly calls Bubbles and Squeak (might not be the right name).

Also some other things I see Holly post and have to look up but can’t remember right now but there’s a few.

Never had Canadian Poutine either but it sounds good.

Growing up and living in the Northeast, I think most the food I eat is "ethnic".

I think the only ethnic food I didn't grow up with was Indian, Thai, Japanese, South African...these came later, except for South African. I love Thai and Indian food.

i love greek food---we lived in a greek neighborhood when we were kids--my mom would send us to get a carry out of lamb and rice

People in China laugh at what passes for Chinese food in the US. Italians do sometimes, too. I've read that meatballs are not served in spaghetti. Italian-American has become it's own thing, like Tex-Mex.

I wish I'd taken some close up pics of the food. Here's one section of buffet table. That red urn you can see is what I thought was a drink of some kind when I gulped it down!

Our table. Someone called me the pied piper because all the kids (grandkids and their friends etc., all ended up at our table! We decided to call it the cool people's table! ;)

Great photos and what a buffet. I grew up on German and Czech foods. I'd like to try more but I'm always afraid to order something different because if I don't like it,I'm stuck with it. The hubby eats such plain foods I doubt he would ever try something different. If I'm at a buffet I always try the different food served.
