It's still balmy here and everyone enjoys talking about food so how about ice cream? Your favorite flavors, favorite places to go for it, do you or have you made it at home? I was reminded today. I was craving a milkshake. Apparently the quickie mart shake machine blew out. Rahhhh, they just had been getting in pumpkin cheesecake too.

But then I remembered the place across the street. Magic Fountain is a franchise. An Italian grandmother and her husband owned this one almost forty years. They just sold it a few months back. I was afraid they would change the ice cream but I'm happy to say they didn't change a thing:playful:

Another place awesome and founded around seventy years ago is Holsten's in Bloomfield, NJ. There's even a plaque for the table where they filmed a Soprano's episode. They still use the old fashioned metal cup blender. Then the cup gets presented with your order mmmmm nothing like it.

My two favorites years ago that have been discontinued (of course) are Baskin Robbins Crème de Caramel and Breyer's Butter Almond. Now I get Pralines and Cream at Baskin Robbins, my fav.

Vanilla is my favorite!

We did make it at home when I was growing up and I made it once several years ago.

When I was a kid I liked to have a milkshake and a tuna fish sandwich in a little diner that always gave you a second glass of the extra milkshake, I thought that was amazing!

I'm also a big fan of the root beer float. I have to make at least one every summer using diet root beer and fake ice cream.

These days I satisfy my ice cream cravings with this low carb frozen dairy product, it's not bad.

On Saturday my wife and I went out to Northampton, MA for the day and stopped by the always excellent Herrell's Ice Cream. Super premium ice cream. I had a flavor called "Baker's Choice".

Baker's Choice—pieces of our various baked goods that are perhaps not in top shape for selling on their own (end pieces, pieces that break, day-olds, etc.), that are added to a vanilla ice cream base. Each batch is different.

Amazingly good!!!

Oooooooh ice cream porn, my favorite:p I remember when I was a kid my Mom would make homemade in the summertime. Basically sweetened condensed milk and a few other things. We would go somewhere where they had an ice machine. They put in change and a block of ice popped out somehow. It was brought home to the basement sink and my brother or Dad used a wicked looking ice pick to break it up for the ice cream freezer. Best ice cream ever...

I bought an ice cream maker when we first got married in the early 70's. It was electric but you needed a ton of salt to put over the ice that surrounded the insert that held the ice cream ingredients. It made quite a mess but the results were heavenly. Today Hubby and I get our ice cream from Weiss Supermarket. We think it is as good or even better than some of the premium brands out there. Loaded with fruit, chocolate chips or whatever you like. My favorite is chocolate chip mint. The hubby loves vanilla fudge swirl. If we go to Dairy Queen it will be a chocolate covered sundae for me, strawberry for the hubby.

Current fave is Ben and Jerry's Karamel Sutra. But any ice cream which includes one or more of the following is good with me: chocolate, chocolate chips, caramel, butterscotch, Heath bar pieces, toffee, coffee, French vanilla, tablet (sort of like fudge but not chocolate).

I like Ben & Jerry's Americone Dream (fudge covered waffle pieces and caramel swirl into vanilla), but I also like to try their new flavors (http://www.benjerry.com/flavors). This week I tried Empower Mint, which was just OK, but not the best mint chocolate chip I've had. One B&J I really enjoyed was their Black & Tan, a cream stout and chocolate combo, but they don't produce that one anymore. It was heavily criticized as one of their all-time worst flavors, but I really liked it.

Around here Blue Bell Ice cream was always a favorite of mine. Over a year ago they had a massive recall that shut their plants down for several months. Installed new equipment etc and began selling again just a few months ago. Darn if they didn't have another recall a couple of weeks ago. I hate it but no more Blue Bell for me......

There was a Hagen Daz flavor many years back...carrot cake. They should so bring that back. Cream cheese ice cream with cake bits and raisins.

My favorite is O'Charley's Caramel Pie. Caramel ice cream swirled with caramel, graham pieces & chocolate caramel cups. It is soooooo GOOD!!!!!

Something positively addictive is mocha. We first had it at a local Japanese place. Now it's available at the supermarket too. Sort of a rice wrap filled with delicately flavored ice cream.
