YouTube content is unbelievable...

I like to watch videos for entertainment, almost always scientific, do it yourself, animals, travel and adventure, sometimes sci fi shorts.

I always search on my browser, then click on a desirable video. I have my browser set to clear all my cookies, cache and history each time it is closed.
I haven't seen the YouTube home/default page in a long time.

So I finally see it in all it's glory and I just felt like puking and/or poking my eyes out with a sharp object. I scrolled through scores of videos which all seemed like total garbage, nothing I could stomach watching. No wonder the world is falling apart...

That's just the "standard fare" of popular content that is frequently viewed by the masses. If you are logged into your
Google / Youtube account you would see video offerings that are similar to what you have watched or searched for.

That's the way! My son has a rare interest. He can't find anything in the area at the library and he has bought every book on the subject that Amazon has. One day while I was on the computer, I searched on his interest in YouTube, and had him come and look. He was thrilled! There was a big video of his special interest. As he sat down I said, "Look what else." and pointed to the twenty little pictures down the right side of the screen.

I think YouTube is really awesome. I have quirky interests myself, but there's always someone else in the world with the same ones who has kindly downloaded (or is it uploaded?) fascinating stuff.

Funny you should mention YT content.........what came up on my feed there today was a video by @Bretrick so I subscribed.
That is interesting my video was given as a suggested video. Which one was it if you do not mind me asking?
My videos are not slick,. When I see something I am interested in out comes the recorder.
I like to share my corner of the world with members.

Deleting cookies means the front page won't customize itself for you.

That said, sometimes it's too focused. For example, I once made the mistake of watching a video with the band Kiss. The algorythm flooded me with Kiss videos for days...........

I find some Youtube videos useful - when researching holidays or new phones for example. Not the melodramatic click baity ones but there are lots of well presented informative ones too.
Gary Bambridge was one of my favourites about cruises.

Yes, that ^
If you don't delete your history, then you'll get recommendations for the type of videos you like most.

And that is the downside. But after watching just a few videos of the kind of content you prefer, then you'll see less of Kiss, or whatever.

Also, you can click on "Do not recommend this channel" if YT recommends one you hate. Below every video there's 3 dots over on the right. Click on them and you'll see a list. "Don't recommend" is on it, plus other actions.

That depends on what you're clicking on. The algorithm just gives you mostly click on. I use it for old tv shows, movies and documentaries and that's all I see.

I watch tons of you tube. Definitely more than regular TV and newer movies. I especially like finding complete tv series I forgot about. I also like the documentaries. A lot of people mistakenly think they only have short form videos.

I love Youtube! When I'm finished in this forum and a certain political forum I turn to Youtube for mindless entertainment. The videos analyzing the Jeff Bezos wedding in Venice, along with Kris Jenner's facelift and why Oprah and Gale should have never been there were enough to get me through the rest of the night!

Youtube is the black hole into which I fall occasionally. I'll look up a song and OH LOOK! there's all those possible videos listed on the right...

Ooh, that looks interesting! I'll just click on that one for a quick peek but then there are a bunch of NEW ones down the right that I just HAVE to watch.

Next thing I know, it's 2 1/2 hours later, my legs are asleep, dinner's past due and I can't remember what song I was looking up in the first place.

I quite like Youtube too but have the same problem as @jujube however I do make little videos which I post for my family, my 15 subscribers get quite excited.

Unfortunately Youtube is killing itself with ads, they have got ridiculous, I have an ad blocker on my browser now and watch videos on Freetube which means content creators don't receive any reward for me watching.

I also download a fair few tutorial videos when I am learning new software or new skills.

YouTube....my number one online entertainment, yes, there is junk on YouTube but like most things you learn to weed it out.
YouTube is an endless world to explore.

I watch much more content on YouTube than my OTA only TV. Much science and technology. And almost all is by searching not from their Home page that as the OP related is an endless wasteland so many ordinary people are obviously attracted to. Will provide advice below on how to find free movies (with ads).

I have a Google account via gmail with a YouTube page of 3 dozen skiing videos but not a commercial pay for account they pressure users to obtain. If one YouTube searches with say "science fiction movies", as @Nathan related, results will be automatically filtered by what Google thinks you need to see for their sake. Some of that is determined by how they analyze who/what you are and the rest by those commercial entities they are paid to push into our faces. So one won't actually see full listings of all possible free movies. Most displayed free movies are from YouTube's paid services, with long lists of the same movies.

Instead, to get a real listing of available free to view with ads science fiction films, web search with say "Wikipedia science fiction 1990s". That will create a chart of all sci-fi films 1990 through 1999. Using the same search process, change the "1990s" to say "2010s" or "1970s" as Wikipedia divides such by decades etc. Then place the titles listed in the search fields to see if they may be freely viewed. The results will show a great many more possible free to view movies than one will otherwise ever see.

Although You Tube has become very commercial over the years, which happens to everything on the internet, I still enjoy it for many things. My husband and I like to karaoke on Friday night :ROFLMAO: You can find just about anything to sing for free!

i subscribe to many on youtube and I really enjoy them. I love 60 Minutes Australia. Love watching National Geographic documentaries. I often watch live webcams; a continuous loop with music of cities around the world. Some videos lately have an ad every few minutes and i tend not to tune into those again.

An early Youtube star was Paul "Bear" Vasquez who lived off the grid in the forest of California near Yosemite and shared his love of nature online on Youtube. AKA as the "Double Rainbow Guy," he became an internet sensation in 2010 after he uploaded a video of his incredibly emotional and ecstatic reaction to a double rainbow outside of Yosemite. His raw joy and exclamations like "Double rainbow all the way across the sky!" and "What does this mean?!" resonated with millions.

He was incredibly prolific with his video creation. So much so that even though Vasquez died in 2020 at the age of 57 he scheduled videos to be automatically be uploaded to his YouTube channel, Yosemitebear62, for the next 15 years. So even now, five years after his passing, his channel continues to release "new" content, almost daily, and will for another 10 years, a testament to his foresight and dedication to sharing his experiences and love for nature.
