Good Grief I'm stunned at the price of Groceries in Canada Video

The point of this video is to show how much more Northern Canadians are paying for their groceries than Southern Canadians and why... and believe me there's a huge difference..

However..I just put the prices of the Cheapest item ( Southern) into currency converter .. and I am shocked even by Southern Canadian prices for groceries..

$17.99 for washing liquid... ( that's almost 14.00 pounds sterling)..there's no way on this earth we'd pay that for washing liquid or tabs... ours are half that price and even less depending on where we buy

The equivalent of 4.50 sterling for a bottle of Pantene in the south.. here it's a pound ( $1.75 cents) ..,...and the poor woman in the north is paying an astonishing astronomical $31 dollars Canadian for the washing liquid.. that's 23.50 approx in British sterling..

Good lord...:eek1:

How does anyone afford those prices?

I saw that or something like it the other day, Holly. It pictured a real frozen north, very little up there. However, I was dismayed to see the gov't is sending surplus up there but some stores are still gouging!

The liquid detergent was Tide that some people think is liquid gold. It is in fact a very good detergent and it's about 11.99 here! People used to shoplift it and sell it on the street! Crazy.

I can understand the higher prices of goods when they have to try and get it through the Tundra...compared to the South, RR... but I don't understand the huge difference in prices for the same goods we get here, Tropicana, Pantene , etc.. and for sure if washing liquid here was as expensive as that, people would be stealing it as well , ..who could afford it?..

I just wondered why even in the south of Canada,,, groceries are so expensive... ( I know it's probably a rhetorical question) but even here in London and the south of England which is supposed to be one of the most expensive places to live in the world, we don't pay anything near those prices.. :(

Just makes me realise how lucky we are...

The thing that I was trying to decide while watching the video is whether or not the government should involve itself.

If the government was not involved would the people have continued to live a native lifestyle or would they have eventually moved to a more habitable area of the country?

Where should the line be between our need for government support and our own personal responsibility?

Very interesting and thought-provoking video.

Keesha, that discount store's specials are about the same as our non-discount store specials. A little higher, but surely not as high as what we've been shown! A few of your sale items are even a bit less.

I think a lot depends on climate and distance from a long season growing climate to a very short one. ie-Canada. Dairy and meat animals take more heat and artificial light so it's natural that their prices be somewhat higher. The prices in your flyer are not unreasonable.

The prices aren’t bad and don’t forget our Canadian dollar isn’t worth nearly as much as yours.

They pay for their health care, it's not "free" -they pay it in taxes and their doctors make less money.
That’s exactly right. We pay taxes

Dish washing liquid is $2 for 100 ml

WoW, that's expensive!! Here Dishwashing liquid ( Fairy )..is 2 pounds . for 1150ml ( sorry my pound sign isn't working on my keyboard).... 2 pounds sterling is #3.50 Canadian.....so you're paying $2 for 100 ml which would be approx $20 CAD , and we're paying the equivalent of $3.50 Canadian, for 1150ml's of the most expensive dish washing liquid

the same dish liquid equivalency in US dollars would be $1.50
and in gbp would be $1.14 so I guess we are paying more but I’m still not complaining. I love our country and where we live and would not trade it for anywhere else in the world

I’m not offended in the least. No worries there.
It works for us and we love where we live so it doesn’t matter to us in the least what other people are paying.

:holymoly:
Thats insane. I’d grow my own fruits and veggies either in the growing season or hydroponically indoors and freeze or can stuff. There is NO WAY I’d be paying anything even remotely close to those prices.

Of course, but look where it is! Barrow, also known by its native name Utqiagvik, is located 330 mi (531 km) above the Arctic Circle

It is the 11th northernmost public community in the world and is the northernmost city in the United States of America.

When you think about how far away it is from everything, the prices aren't really that shocking.

Very true RaddishRose. That’s the same reason products are so expensive in the northerner regions of Canada. The roads leading up there are treacherous and some truck drivers even drive over frozen water. They risk their lives doing this. There’s a show about it in telecom called Ice Truckers. My man likes watching it so I hear tidbits of information while elsewhere
