Anyone Else Sick and Tired of the Boob Tube?

I spent 4.5 months in hospital/rehabs for the knee infection in late 2016, early 2017...and had a crappy tv in my area and then the roommates would have their tv going all day and some all night. I got so sick of tv when I finally came home and waded thru a mess of bills, etc etc etc and found TWC messed up and didn't keep my tv going as they messed up payments, and then wanted like $300 to get back on track with them, I said the hail with it and told them to come and get the black box or I'd have it thrown out in the alley...they finally came. My friends can't believe I don't have a tv..

I get all I need on my NPR and other stations plus I don't have to look at current politicians .. hearing them is too much.

When I'm listening to my NPR and others I'm laying on my bed and stretching out my stiff body. Sitting for hours is the last thing I need to do.

PS: I save just about $100 a month with no tv. More money for good quality stuff I really want....like good nutritional supplements.

Not entirely. Rarely have it on during the day; usually for an hour or so in the evening. If I hear of something
newsworthy , I'll flip it on. Sometimes if my fave sports team is playing, I'll watch. Otherwise I'll read a book
or go shopping. I know some peeps turn it on in the morning and leave it on ALL DAY LONG, whether they're
watching it or not.

The only reason I watch is because the hubby is glued to his recliner day and night and is totally addicted to TV. I sit with him for a few hours in the evening. Usually I do some kind of needlework so I don't go completely crazy. Once in awhile we will get a DVD from the library which on rare occasions is enjoyable.

I have my radio on all day just to feel someone is with me and not complete silence. No S.O. so NPR is my S.O. I've had some good laughs and learning since I found NPR in recent years.

No, I'm not tired of the TV, even though I don't watch it that much, there are certain shows I enjoy seeing. I remember as a small child, not having a TV at all in the apartment. Then one day my father brought home our first black & white television, and we were all amazed by it. The kids weren't allowed to work it, so my parents decided what and when we would watch a show. When we switched to color, it was that much better. If I was in the hospital like you were Jam, I would definitely want a TV in my room, as long as it wasn't showing any soap operas. :p

PS: I have NPR on the radio right now and have been listening to it on weekends.

We were one of the later families to get a tv and Hopalong Cassidy comes to mind. I didn't watch too much tv as I worked 40 yrs and raised a child and my last fun show was the re-runs of 2-1/2 Men. I dated a lot during those 40 yrs and tv was not on the top of "things to do"... And never never had a tv in my bedroom and I know millions are there. For good quality sleep a dark room, no electronics and for sure EMF's... Most nights I go to sleep with George Noory and I'm asleep before radio goes off.

I like to watch the morning news and financial reports while eating breakfast. Then, the evening news, and Wheel of Fortune, and then, most evenings the TV supplies the opportunity for a good after Supper nap. Out of the 200+ channels we get, I seldom watch more than a half dozen. The rest could all have NBC(Nothing But Commercials) for their call letters. At least we don't pay that much for this largely useless service, as it is bundled with the phone and internet.

We have a TV in the bedroom, lately we've been watching a stand up comedian at the end of the day for a few laughs before bed. I also listen to the radio at night under my pillow, I will definitely listen to Coast if the topic is of any interest to me. No computers or smartphones in the bedroom though, only our landline.

If something of interest is on C to C, I'll force myself to stay awake until I'm gonno...

It depends how you watch it, doesn't i?. You can be smart about it or just plain stupid. I think this is a good example of "smug".

When I was a kid we had appointment TV where the set was turned on in time to warm up for The Wonderful World of Disney, the evening news, Bonanza and then shut off when the program was over.

Today I have the television on most of the day while I'm puttering around.

I watch old fashioned air TV so the cost is not an issue.

When my wife is at work, the tv is off until 1PM, when I watch Gunsmoke on METV (Memorable Entertainment TV). Once my wife comes home, unless we go out to eat or shop, the tv comes on. She absolutely loves HGTV as in Property Bros., Love It or List It and a few other shows on that station. The one show, on HGTV, that I absolutely hate is the Lottery one. The host of that looks like a gangbanger!

We record American Idol and Sunday Morning. Last week, when she was off (vacation), we watched/recorded Let's Make A Deal and Price Is Right. She loves both of those game shows. When DWTS starts up again, we will watch that.

Back when I was in my teens/20's, I loved watching all of the Westerns on tv. Roy Rogers/Dale Evans, Lone Ranger, Wagon Train, Wanted Dead Or Alive, High Chaparral, The Virginian and so on. Later I got into watching Dallas, Knotts Landing, Dynasty and some others.

But, it is definitely my wife who is the "tv hound".

I gave up my cable because I never turned on my TV except at night for background noise...needed it to fall asleep.

I do have Netflix, Hulu and prime though and do binge watch my favorites on my iPad.

We only watch about 3 shows a season as far as American TV. We think most of it is silly, stupid, smutty, poorly written, junk. 90% of our watching is Brit TV, foreign films, Indie films, and films in general (several genres) rented through Netflix or local library. We like good plot, dialog, character building. "Regular" TV shows don't do that and are just plain dull.

TV a tool for indoctrination and profit. I can get knowledge as I need it through specific research on the internet. I have been avoiding the news lately, as broadcasters seem to relish in the decline of humanity. I don't trust NPR, as I hear bias and attempts to change my mood. It's as if every broadcast from every source has an agenda. I may be overly sensitive, but I have an ability to be emotionally swayed. I try to avoid manipulation.

We had all paid television turned off almost 2 years ago now. We have a little antenna that we bought on Amazon and it picks up local stations, but we seldom even turn on the TV unless there is serious weather, and we need to watch in case there are tornadoes sighted anywhere near us.
We also dropped Netflix because I don’t watch many movies, and Bobby found that most of the ones on Netflix were things he was not interested in either.
We have Amazon Prime, so that comes with free movies, and we use that if we want to watch a movie.
I have always been a reader, so in the evening, I usually read a book and Bobby watches movies with his iPad and we both use headphones, so we do not disturb each other.

For background noise I have my radio on everyday to music stations. Never the TV.
I turn on the TV in the evening to check up on the news/weather stuff. Then watch lighthearted shows wherever I can find them.
I usually fall asleep at night to old reruns, with the TV timer set.

I see you mentioned George Noory. I’m a way back Art Bell fan and got hooked on that program years ago. I find myself less interested in tv than I use to be. I enjoy reading a lot more than I use to.

I hadn't gotten into Coast in the days of Art Bell, but I've heard about him a lot. I've learned so much on Coast I would have never heard elsewhere...more and more believing in the UFO world. Use to say, "no way", but that's changed. Of course, retirement has changed everything.

I like when George has guests like Dr. Mindell, Ben Fuchs the pharmacist and Joel Wallach....Dr. Mindell was on the panel of docs and researchers when Pycnogenol was brought to my mind back in 1995 and hence Grape Seed Ex and now OFF the drugs I took back before. These 3 are NOT bought off by Pharma...

On the music issue, the other day NPR in one of their music segments had a lot of music from the 50's my prime time as a young dancing queen,,,,Sam Cook, Fats Domino etc and then during my marriage I did NOT dance as I married a math major, but after divorce was back on the dance floor in 70's on...

Probably much of the OA I live with was due to my dancing years, but I had fun and laughed a lot and start to smile when I think of those times.

That's because they DO, and they definitely want to manipulate the masses.
