I have a cage and everything and am going to buy a couple of Budgies soon. I thought I would leave the cage/aviary empty for a couple of weeks so the dogs would get used to it. No, the dogs won't have any way of getting to the birds. They will have their pen. I used to help clean the cage of my mother's parakeets and I am doing a lot of reading on how to acclimate them to their new home and family.

I have 2 female Parakeets and have had several others for the past 17 years. Doing reading is what I did too when I first started getting Parakeets. I have a dog but my keets are up high on a shelf. Mine fly around the room a bit every day. They are sweet little creatures.

Don't let them out when ceiling fans are running. Our DIL did that with her cockatiel and the bird got knocked on her arse.

I'm very pleased to know that you'll be letting them out of their cage. Many people just stick the cage on a window sill and think the bird is content to spend its time looking out of the window. They need to be out, and able to fly around. I have had budgies for as long as I can remember. They are very entertaining. They do make a lot of noise when the tv is on though.

I've had many parakeets over the years. my vet told me never to put grit in the bottom of the cage. He said he's seen many birds die because their crop gets packed with it. I've never used it for my present bird anand he is 16.

once had a large aviery in garden - with all types small birds - had two big parrots but they where noisy ' but i do like the big ones - plus several canaries' but now I hate to see birds caged up ……..

Thanks Keesha. I had thought about finches or parakeets. Will see what I get when I get there.
You’re welcome fancicoffee. I loved those birds and was so upset when I lost them.
I did let them fly around the house often. It meant a bit more cleaning up but it was so worth it.
If I didn’t have a cat I’d seriously consider getting another bird. But then again, I have a husband now and they might clash.

Had several budgies in the past. They need to be let out of the cage to fly. Some are brilliant mimics.
