Push notifications

When you have a new alert, the browser will push it to you, you don't have to refresh the page to see if you have new alerts.

Something like this, I'm not very sure, though. Just enable it, you can always disable it later if you find it annoying.

I don't really understand it either. I wonder why nothing happened on my laptop.

It seems straightforward on Android: you use a browser to visit this forum, the forum will push the alerts to your phone, even if you are not using your browser. I'm using an Apple which doesn't support Push, so I can't test it.

Let me see if I can help....

For days I didn't push it because I didn't understand it either ..then matrix said do it and I did.

After doing so I was on another site shooting pool pulling back to aim at the eight ball getting ready to make 2500 coins.

And POP down in the right hand corner I got a notification from SF that said someone had replied to a thread I had posted on.

Now I'm on a PC and I had several tabs open at the time so don't know what a phone would do.

Needless to say I made the shot and won the game...all is well.

Well, I'm one of those people who don't really understand what push notifications is. It is starting to be annoying though to see the reminder pop up, and when I close it out and don't accept, it keeps coming back.

Sooo, since Matrix said we can change it back to NO push notifications, I figured I'd give it a try. Just accepted notifications, if I see anything unusal, different, etc., I'll post it here.

Honestly, I didn't care anything about push notifications because there is no notification that's so important that I can't wait for, they seem to come frequently. Also, I really just visit the forum on my home desktop, so it's not that complicated.

If things look the same or pretty normal, I'll keep it on, if not I'll turn it off and share my reasons why. :)

Now I understand a little more. I just went over to Pet Forums and a small pop-up came on the page at the bottom right of the screen. It showed Seeker's avatar and said that she just sent me a like notification on Senior Forums in this thread. It was kind of neat, not very invasive, so I'll keep it on for awhile and see if it happens on other online websites, like when I'm browsing the web or shopping somewhere.

Update: I was just on a website completely unrelated to these forums and had a pop up from a notification I got in the Humor section, another one just showed as I'm typing on this site. They don't have to be closed with the X, they just disappear pretty quickly on their own.

You can customize which notifications get pushed as well.
Not sure about the tab thing I'm just learning..mine were open.

The privacy option for showing if one is online/offline, is not working.
@Pinky
I think Matrix has said that if you are online and have the privacy set to not show your status .. no one BUT you can see that you are online .. I think that is what the confusion is.

Why is it that I was the only one that asked?

Didn't make any difference to me so far and I don't have a lock on the address bar.

I get push notifications on my cell phone but I didn't know they were called that.

How was it aggravating. I only get a notice on the Bell that I have a notification from someone who answered my post. That's it. I don't get anything else. So I click on it and someone has given me a like or a comment. It's handy. What it really means is that if someone is interested in your post the notification will tell you.

Why do I get the idea that I'm going to get a slew of "push" messages telling me I can save 45% at Progressive, etc.? While I enjoy this forum, there isn't a need to be immediately informed that I agreed with somebody at 3:56 AM.
Bah!! Humbug !!!! You whippersnappers and your new fangled inventions.

I said OK to the push notifications thing, but it was aggravating as all get out, so I turned them off in the way Matrix suggested.

I still have mine on, don't find it aggravating yet, just the tiny window at the bottom of the web page I'm on telling me I have a new notification from someone. Chances are I'll shut mine off again in a day or so, I don't see the need of knowing my notifications immediately, just visiting the forum and clicking the bell if it shows a number in red is good enough for me.
