Keep on wearing out waterpiks

Keep on wearing out old school waterpiks with nothing but the water jet. Sometimes I don't even get a year. I always make sure there is water in the tray so the pump doesn't run dry. I rinse with water after I put something in it like mouth wash. Is it a pump problem? An electric motor problem? or leaks in the system causing little or no pressure?

What brand do you have? I just bought a new pic (one that I have never used before), but the last one lasted about 7 years. Maybe you should get a new up to date pic. I don’t know anything about them, other than how to use it.

Get a water softener "test strip", and test your water. You may have an excess of calcium, lime, etc., in your tap water that is clogging up the small water passages. You can usually get these strips for a few cents at most home improvement stores that sell water softeners. If that's the case, you might consider getting a water filter "pitcher" and using the water from that....would be cheaper than buying a new water pick every year.

Wonder if running some water with water softner or clr might clear it.

But that's probably it if there is not a leak in the system.

Thanks

I always warn folks about those devices. The two times I tried one, I ended up getting terrible gum infections. Granted, I was using a pik with the "pocket picker" tip that may, or may not, still be in production, but I swore, after the second round, that I'd never use those things, again. That was about twenty years ago. The physics of the thing made it clear, to me, why I had the trouble I did: The tip simply forced food and bacteria deeper under the gum line where the bacteria could thrive. Maybe the newer units are better. I'll never find out, as I'm happy with my routine, now.

If it seems to work, but the water flow is restricted, you might try running some water with a mixture of "LimeAway" through it a couple of times. We have well water with a lot of minerals in it, and I have to soak our shower heads, etc., 2 or 3 times a year with LimeAway or "LimeOut" to clear the water holes. If that helps, then run a couple of cycles with clear water....I don't think you would want any LimeAway residue in your mouth.
Then, too, I would tend to agree with Treeguy, in that running any high pressure water around your gums might not be a real good idea... better to use something like an "Oral B", and dental floss, and finish with a good mouthwash.
