What do you think about protests?

So true Aunt Bea...the race riots in the 60's were about the "paid agitators" that were hired (believed to be outside the country hires). When major event protesters were compared across the country, the same faces appeared over and over in cities thousands of miles apart within days of each other. That happened in Cleveland, Ohio. I was escorted to my teenage part time job by the National Guard!

Kindly cite your source for the above. I lived on the South Side of Chicago. I knew who was protesting during the riots of the 60's: They were my neighbors and school mates. Again, I want to know where you obtained your information about "paid agitators."

I lived in Cleveland, Ohio during the race riots. Was a teenager and was interviewed by local police. The area where the Sears Roebuck building was - where I worked part time was ground zero for the riots. They closed Carnegie Avenue at East 55th and had National Guard escorting anyone that went in an out. I was interviewed by the authorities and shown film of the agitator faces from protests across the country. The local paper printed information indicating the possible "communist" involvement. The FBI office was located in Cleveand and they'd known for years there was confirmed communist activity in the city.

I don't know about Chicago, lets face it Chicago has been known for local illegal activities for many years...but that part of working class Cleveland (during that time) was a different matter...of course there are different areas in a large city and a crowd can be incited into riotous action by a few...we all know that. The neighbors were very friendly in that area - blacks and white working people got along, even to leaving an empty stool vacant at the busy lunch counter at the 5 & dime next door for a poor sick woman that had lost her child and thought she was still alive.

We should have such good relations today!

This is from Ohio Central:

The first disturbance in Cleveland, the Hough Riots, lasted for several days in 1966, and the Cleveland police force proved ineffective in quelling the violence. It finally took 2,200 Ohio National Guardsmen to reestablish order. Arson fires destroyed several blocks of homes and businesses in the Hough neighborhood on the east side of Cleveland. Four African Americans died. A grand jury assigned to investigate the riots concluded that outsiders had caused the disturbance.

Riots occur when desperate people's peaceful attempts fail to enact change. I expect there will be worldwide rioting sooner rather than later over economic inequality and the mostly ignored global warming that is destroying people's homes and their ability to feed themselves.

If peaceful protests are ignored, the desperate will up the ante. As happened in the 1960s in the US.

It was the National Guard rioting that left 4 dead, not the protesters.

The Ohio National Guard rioting?

I don’t want to get into a debate over the Kent State tragedy. There was a lot that happened days before the shootings that led up to May 4, 1970. To this day, the consensus is very mixed. Blame has been placed on the ONG, the KSU students that participated in the rallies and protests, KSU Administrators and the SDS. It’s not an argument anyone can win, no matter what side any of us take.

IMO, one thing is for sure. It could have been prevented, if only ........ ......... ......... ........ ........ ............... ................ ........ (fill in the blanks)

“One” of the things that I really felt bad about, besides all the injuries that happened on that day due to gunfire, 2 of the 4 students that were killed were only going to class. They had nothing to do with the rally or protest.

Peaceful protests don't do a damn thing. Those in power just ignore them.
