What's yer pain tolerance?

Dentist and dental technicians have been telling me all of my adult life that if I don't floss more I'm going to lose all my teeth. One dental tech in the Air Force told me that I could lose all my teeth in "a matter of weeks" if I didn't start flossing better. Well here it is 50 years later and I still have them all. A year or two back my hygenist tried to talk me into coming in three times a year for cleaning instead of two so I wouldn't lose my teeth. I told her "I'm 70 years old, realistically I don't really need them to last me all that much longer".

They told me the same thing about losing my teeth 20 years ago when this deep scale cleaning became a thing. I even had one hygenist tell me in a very serious tone "that if I were her brother, she would do everything she could to get me to do the deep cleaning, it's that important". 20 years later, not only do I have all my teeth, but I haven't even had a cavity. Even if down the road I do end up losing my teeth, I am pretty confident in thinking that passing on the deep scale cleaning played little to no role in that.

Yeah..."Deep Cleaning." In this economy, there is NO limit to the financial creativity of dentists & doctors. I'm surprised at how many people (robots) go for it.

38 years ago, I had shingles. I thought it was a spider bite. After a few days, my ex insisted on seeing the doctor. He said, "I can't believe you didn't see me sooner; this is so painful, I've had patients commit suicide."
I said, "Well, can you cure it?"
He said, "I'd like to give you a B-12 shot."
I said, "Does that cure it?"
He said, "No."
I said, "No thanks. I'm sure it will get better on its own," which it did & never came back.

Well....I guess they gotta do something--even if it's useless--so the patient feels they can help.......

I have been told by more than one Doctor that I was a Trooper and could really get through a procedure without complaining. To tell you the truth I didn't see how my complaining would ease the pain. Sometimes I just wanted to scream and say stop, but it wouldn't do any good.

Mine has always been pretty high for everything but severe migraines and fibromyalgia. FM is relentless bone to skin pain like the flu that may last several days or weeks on end. The worst I can compare it to are migraines and broken bones. It's not as bad as the worst migraine, but is abount on par with a broken bone.

As for pain, the worst I ever had was with a kidney stone. I pretty much wimped out with that. I thought I was gonna die.

When I had a kidney stone a couple of years ago,I told the ER nurse that it felt just like labor. She said "Yes,that`s exactly what they feel like. Which is why women tolerate it better. The men who come in with kidney stones are usually crying."

OMG!!! OMG!!!!!:eek: you poor man, what on earth happened?... and how long ago..do you still suffer pain from those horrendous burns?

I was blown up in a grease pit at a service station in the early 70's. Wife sneaked a camera into my room and snapped this pic, after some of the swelling had gone down and I was able to open my eye's. 2nd and 3rd degree over 60% of my body. Strangely, heat doesn't bother me, but, cold does. To this day, on occasion I still shed skin off my elbows as they were burned to the bone. At the time, the hospital I was in was trying something new to them. Everyday, they'd put my whole body in saline solution and debride my skin. (that's a polite way to say skinned me alive). And all that without pain medication so they would know where there was nerve damage. I have to say that the procedure obviously worked because I have very little scarring.

Very high tolerance. Doctors are always amazed. Hours of being tattooed, as well. That being said, I'm not sure I'd be cool with getting some of the piercings I did on others. Every guy whose ***** I pierced, took it very well. I'm sure my accuracy and bedside manner had something to do with it, but still.......

That sounds terrible squatting Dog. I was a mechanic in the 70's and 80's and I spent my share of time in grease pits. I can't imagine having that happen. Glad to hear you've come out of it as good as you have.

Worst part was I was working on the lift next to the pit and needed a drop light. they were usually hung on the lip of the pit. well, they had rolled a car over the pit and knocked the light down inside. I crawled under that car, picked up the light and tried it. There was a little flash of fire that flew out of the switch and then boom. Turned out the car had a fuel tank leak and the gas and fumes had built up in the pit. (where we stored all the motor oil I might add). To this day, I have no memory of how I wormed my way out from under the car because my next memory was rolling on the floor trying to put out the fire I was engulfed in. I noticed some time ago that drop lights didn't have that switch on them anymore. Kind of wish that had been the case back then.
Since then, I live with the thought that everyday above ground is a good one.

I wouldn't want to think what would've happened had you not been able to get out from under the car. You were both lucky and smart for getting out no matter how you managed it.

I had a dentist try to upsell me to one of those. To the tune of $1200 bucks.

I switched dentists instead.

Kidney pain can be the worst! The worst pain I've ever had was from a UTI.

Pain threshold? I can handle a fair amount of pain .
As far as teeth and dentists go, when we were kids our parents wouldn’t allow us to get freezing so if we had cavities , they were just drilled as is.
In my opinion, the dentist should have had his license revoked.

Plus I’ve broken so many bones now.
Having a bad cold as well as broken ribs hurts pretty bad; especially when you have to cough.
It’s killer difficult.

Psychological torture can be brutal especially at a very young age because it never really goes away.

Yep! I can be a tough old bird.

My husband’ is a total wuss when it comes to getting needles or having his teeth cleaned and what’s with the ā€˜man cold?’ 🤭🤫

My pain tolerance varies, dependent on the source, location, depth, and duration of it. Also, physical pain is one thing, and psychological pain another. I think why dental pain and the pain of dental treatment resonates so strongly with many people is that it is inflicted on one area recurrently and without the possibility of escaping it. Dentists and their hygienist cohorts are also strange people; seriously, who else would tell you that your gums look great, or wax passionate about flossing?!

I've been on pain medication for well over twenty years. I have a bad back. I've had surgery, but it didn't work. I hate to talk about my pain, because it makes me seem so damn whiny. But without those two pills everyday, I'd never be able to get out of bed.
