Have you ever had irrational fears?

Fear is a pushy little bugger isn't it. It reminds you of that one time, way back years ago. But can you trust negative memories or any memories for that matter? We tend to rationally embellish memories, a lot, over time.

What kinds of fears are you talking about, RR? Economic, political, neighborhood crime, health, spiders, relationship issues? Maybe if you give us a general topic we can give more specific advice.
Nothing big deal... except spiders. LOL. Thank you my friend for caring. I was more curious about skills in general, or opening an opportunity for others to discuss.. I'm okay.

I nursed a bit of angst while living in the mountains...re; wind storms, trees falling, fire
But, came to a resolve
Whatever happens, happens

Now, snakes?!
I can be irrational
(shudder)
@Gary O' , I always thought you and Mrs. O were so brave. I would become so afraid of fire up there, that it would become irrational.... it would affect my every move, I think.

Notice at night you can get strange thoughts in your head - irrational fears, just off the wall stuff?
Many years ago, learned to mentally "wrap" the thought in brown butcher paper and mentally throw it over a big waterfall. Know it sounds strange, but it works. We live in the woods, you should hear the screech owls at night. If you didn't know what they were they could scare the daylights out of you.

Many years ago, when we were building the house, we lived in the apt. next door, above a large garage. The living room had a clear glass door that opened to a deck my husband had built. We had a table and chairs out there. At the time we had two little Persian kittens. One night, we heard a loud thud and banging sounds - got out of bed to see what it was...it was a huge owl with an enormous wing span that had got tangled up in the table and chairs. The bird had been swooping down to try to grab a kitten he saw through the door. He wore himself out, thrashing around, but finally managed to untangle his wings and talons from the furniture and flew away.

After my husband died, I developed an intense fear of falling off things. I couldn't bring myself to stand on a stepstool to change a light bulb. I'd even hang onto the wall when I stepped down about 4 inches into my garage. I'd find myself trailing my hand along a wall when I walked.

I didn't really do anything about it. It seemed to disappear about as fast as it came on. Lasted about 3-4 months.

We just killed a coral snake last week, they are beautiful...just keep a good "hoe" by the front door. If we walk around the drive and ever see one (not many, but we do have 'em) we go back, get the hoe and if its still there, we separate the head from the the body. Hey, hawks and coons gotta eat too you know...lol.

Some fears can't be avoided. I have a fear of dentists. What do I do when I have a toothache? The fear doesn't go away. I've talked about it, written it down on paper, taken a support person with me, told the dentist, and all that's ever happened is that I've been made fun of. So I just shut my mouth (till I get to the dentist) and be terrified while I'm there.

I guess that's an example of facing your fears? It's not easy though. I need to go now, and I've been putting it off for weeks.

Have you tried going to a woman dentist?

@Liberty actually, I have. She gave me a happy tooth slobber thingie that goes around your neck. It really didn't help.
I've been told the fear of dentists comes from the unnatural state of having someone put their hands into your mouth, losing control and so forth. Evidently dentists know this and its part of their schooling to recognize this issue so they know how to seek to make the person comfortable and also don't just learn to think so many people hate them. It is a known condition and you are among a lot of people whether they tell you or not.

I had a root canal last year and on the form, it said "have you ever had a bad experience at a dentist". I told the endo guy, who had a wonderful bedside manner, that I'd never had a bad experience at a dentist until I saw his bill!

For me, it's not so much the dentist, but pain the dentist causes. Yet, I've found that today's dentistry is much different than when I was younger Get a funny dentist, if you can laugh, it's miraculous how easy it becomes. Make that appointment, Grammie....before anything gets worse.

I don't think fear of the dentist is an irrational fear. I went to one who made me feel like an animal at the vet. I couldn't stand it and got out of there as quickly as possible. His filling didn't hold so I went to another guy. Wow, what a difference.
