Ok all honesty here lol....Halloween night' lots of knocks on the door ' are you a softy with kids 'loads of sweets to give them ,
trick n treat ' or do you say go away - sit with the lights off ' :eek: or do you answer a couple of times- then it gets on the nerves !
I remember one time I had no sweets in at all -so did not answer -nxt day my car was covered with party string 'made me late for work took me a hour to clean off ..hahahah..1200-544670588-trick-or-treat-game.jpg
 

For years I bought many bags of fun sized candy bars so I could be generous with the kids and not run out. I'd sit at alert near the front door waiting for the next group of kids to come, was a long evening for me. Then as time went on and the little ones in the neighborhood grew up, I noticed there were just loads of older kids being brought to my area in cars, trucks and vans from distant neighborhoods. Some were teens not even dressed in a costume.

I tired of the routine, I don't even like the ringing doorbells and begging for treats, when I was a kid we'd go to a party or stay home. I think my mother let me go twice, in the afternoon with my friends, because I begged her. Found that it wasn't a good fit for me, didn't like doing it, so I stopped. Sometimes we go out for a date night to a movie and restaurant, and come back home when the crowds are gone. If I decided to stay home now because I didn't feel up to going out, I'd shut off the front porch light with no problem, I'm not being mean doing it, IMO.
 

We get a few little ones from other homes in the neighborhood. Their parents are always with them and they have obviously put some effort into their costume. I know most of them and enjoy seeing them have fun, so I am a bit on the generous side.
We do get a few older kids from other areas. My view is that if they are willing to dress up and travel over here, then I am more than willing to give them a few pieces of candy. Overall, we may see 25 kids total.
A few years ago I was visiting my older sister in Northern California, she got hordes of kids in large packs knocking on her door. They had obviously been trucked in from out of the area as if this was a business. There were groups of 30 or 40 kids wandering around. That got old in a hurry and after we ran out of candy, we turned the lights off and retreated to the back of the house.
Not fun!
 
I never have any trick or treaters in my building.

Every year I still preheat the oven in case a nice plump one comes to the door, just kidding my pretty mwahahaha!

I like seeing kids having fun, but my street has no sidewalks so we don't get any trick-or-treaters.
 
I LOVE HALLOWEEN!!! Loved it as a kid when it was my turn to beg for candy, loved it as a young adult when I threw rip-roaring Halloween parties, loved it as a parent of young kids when I took them from house to house, and love it now as one who stays home and passes out treats.

Yes, I buy candy. Yes, I open the door. Yes, I hand out treats to all comers. Kids, adults, pretty much whoever puts a bag out and says, "Trick or Treat!" We get roughly 100 T.O.T.ers per Halloween and greatly enjoy seeing them all. It's a welcome throwback to a time when people were less suspicious of strangers.

Undoubtedly some kids who knock at our door are probably not from our neighborhood. Perhaps their own neighborhoods aren't safe, or the terrains are hilly, or there are no sidewalks. No biggie. I don't mind spending $40 annually for candy that'll spread joy to the residents of my neighborhood and some who live beyond it.

Halloween's my favorite holiday! When my husband was alive, we went all-out with the decorations and gave out really quality treats (candy as well as little things like spider rings, whistles, etc.).

The last year we did that, a bunch of teenagers came really late and tried to force their way into the house, grabbing all the candy they could get. That was the end of handing out treats, especially when I was there alone.

Now that we've moved into a better neighborhood, I'm ready to decorate again and hand out treats. I'm actually getting my outfit together.

You remind me of a neighbor I had growing up who LOVED halloween. She'd dress up like a glamor witch and hand out candy to everybody so cheerfully. It's changed so much in my neighborhood now. People give kids $5.00 bills. Next day I find them all over the place like it wasn't enough for these entitled kiddos. I can't afford that. And I think it's insulting to those who gave it to them. So it's lights out here. I can live with myself.

Maybe it’s because you are so far from civilization. I used to patrol your area and remember seeing more deer than people throughout the night.

No meanies here but no kids either.
We live in a rural area where most houses are miles away.

It’s not only illogical for them but not too safe.
I’d LOVE to give out candy to kids if I could.
Like Starsong I loved Halloween as a kid and went out as soon as it hit dark until about 9:00 at night.
It was a blast.

One woman every year gave out these really elaborate handmade toffee apples that were to dye for BUT you had to give a trick for the treat. You literally had to entertain her for the privilege of one of these apples.

Lots of kids skipped her house but I sang my heart out every year to get that toffee apple and it was one of the highlights of the evening.

This kind of thing would never happen these days
 
Back in 1992, I was working out of the Franklin, Pennsylvania Barracks. I had just come on duty that evening when I received a call of a missing 11 y/o girl that had left a Girl Scout meeting/Halloween party. I searched all night, waking people to ask them if they had seen the little girl and for the next few days, I think I had a total of 2 hours of sleep. This case took years to resolve. It was on my mind every single day for 10 years. We also had the FBI involved. Thanks to DNA, we were able to find our killers.

The town actually suspended trick or treating for several years.

I live in an apt building,we don't get any kids
I remember from my childhood,when our candy bowl was empty, dad would turn off the living room lights,sit in the TV room in back of the house.Every time the door bell rang,our dog would start barking
 
When we lived in the city, we always stocked up on candy and enjoyed the little ones coming to the door. Out here in the boondocks, we had a couple of kids from up the road come by, until they grew up. Now, its doubtful that we will have any "visitors", but we still buy a big bag of Kit Kats every year, in case some kids do show up....and we have a couple of weeks of snacks for ourselves.
 
Our previous canines and our current doggie went nuts just hearing the kids and families outside on H'ween nite so never opened the doors for them....however H'ween is also my fav festivity as I ride around checking out all the fun and action going on....I'm also at the town gazebo later on, being a part of the music, enjoying all the costumes on the kids, adults and the canines, with all the stores decorated with white and orange lites while the owners pass out candy, being a safe place for trick or treaters 🎃👻👿👽💀
