Difficult New Job

Hi I've written in previous letters about a new job in retail. I've been at it for about a week now. Man its So physically and mentally HARDER than what I thought. So much heavy lifting involved. The 8 hour days are the hardest then having to have a Smile on my face when I'm in So much Pain. I want to make it through, I'm afraid of permanently hurting myself? My youngest daughter is my strongest critic, that I just don't want to do it. That hurts my feeling. They seem to forget that I'm 65? Should I talk to my supervisor and ask if there's another position I can do? Jobs for people our age are hard to find as it is. Don't want to permanently injure myself. Thanks for reading.

That brings back memories.
10 years ago, at 57, I got a part-time job delivering medical samples & documents to doctors. The first day was training - the owner had me go with an employee & help, watch & learn.
We left the office at 8:00am. We finished at 5:00pm. "Part Time?" The job was FULL TIME but it paid part time. When I told the owner why I was quitting, she acted surprised. I said, "Ma'am, look at your watch & tell me what time it is. On what planet is 9 hours of work "Part Time?"
And, (just like you) I was in terrible pain after getting in & out of a car 50-80 times.
If your job involves heavy lifting, you're practically guaranteeing a serious injury at 65. Is it worth it?
I stopped helping people move at 55.

Thanks for sharing, that's what I'm afraid of getting hurt permanently? It's been hard because I was home for 3 years pretty much doing nothing because I was suffering from anxiety and depression. So I'm very much out of shape. Maybe looking into fast food? There shouldn't be any heavy lifting. Or a clothing store? I've tried caregiving, there they also gave me misinformation with caring for the seniors, that we do things in a team of 2. Not, they expected me to handle a senior by myself??? I quit after 6 day's. I told them I would get hurt or the senior would? What are these people thinking?? I'm 64 year old senior, I couldn't possibly handle this by myself???

Forget about what your daughter is saying. YOU are the one who has to live in your body, not her. Younger people frequently have absolutely NO idea what older people have to cope with -- they see everything through the lens of a young person who can do anything they want to physically. I think it is very mean of her to say such things to you.

Ask her if she is prepared to take care of you and support you if you get injured and are unable to work.

First I think you should talk to your boss about working on something easier for the same company. They might have just the right job for you. No way should you risk your health on this job. I hope it all goes well for you.

I agree with what Butterfly said too.

You are So right, I think my customers feel the same way? They watch me bag their items some of it is heavy and expect me to load their cart? Majority are way younger than me. I've taken pain Medication and laying on a ice pack. Should I call them or go to them in person and explain my situation? Would like to see if there is another position I can handle? But afraid they'll say No feeling that I couldn't handle this one? I just ignore my daughter, w
It's hard to hear and would like more support like I support her. Maybe look in fast food place? There's No heavy lifting there. I really need a job. Thanks for your support🙂

Thanks for your support, should I call or speak to her in person?

Retail and fast food require prolonged standing - not good for older leg veins. I worked retail for 7 years in my 30's & 40's. I have terrible varicose veins in both legs. And, in both retail & fast food, you'll probably be doing heavy lifting. I unloaded merchandise off trucks.
If I were job hunting now, I'd be looking for a desk job.

Thanks for sharing,. I don't have any problem with standing. Fast food doesn't have heavy lifting, you hand people a bag. A friend of mine worked fast food told me this. Are there desk Jobs anymore?

if the boss will not give you something easer and you cannot afford to quite, perhaps looking for a different job is coming your way. I worked part time at a hardware and lots of heavy loading and unloading quite a couple years ago at 67 don't want to get hurt and not be able to enjoy retirement/don't hurt yourself for a few dimes.

Thanks for sharing, you're right, I was going to continue looking for another job. I'm so sore I can't sleep. I live in California and it's 4:30 am. I'm wide awake with a ice pack on my back. I'm suppose to go into work around 2 today. I was going to look to agencies for work or fast food places?

Hi decided to call my job and not return I'm still in a lot of pain. Barely slept. Not worth hurting myself over.

Pain is a warning that our body is telling us that we need to not be doing what is causing the pain. If you are experiencing back, leg, neck or arm pain, you should consider either asking for another position or leave. In the meantime, like others have stated, consider seeking another position.

Do you need to work, or are you just wanting to keep busy?

Thanks for writing, I need to work. I doubt that me calling out even temporary, that they'd want to give me another chance somewhere else? You are correct, my pain is intense, I have 4 more working days before I get a day off. I've n pain Medication didn't help at ALL. Feel guilty for doing this, just know I can't 😖

Thanks for writing, you are correct, I'm in So much pain I feel nauseous. Pain Medication and ice didn't help at All. I'm going to call and tell them I can't come back. I feel guilty about this, but I have 4 days before my next day off, can't imagine what condition I'll be in after that?

Well if you get hurt, they'll put you on light duty.
Companies these days don't have light duty. I don't want to get hurt anyway, I didn't realize how physical this job would be? I'm sure other places will be hiring for the holidays. Thanks for writing

What pain meds are you using? If you can tolerate Advil, (the new little minis) I have found them to be great. However, if your pain is so intense to almost being unbearable, I think you may be risking doing something permanent or perhaps, causing a tear. Intense pain should not be ignored.

I was using Tylenol, I'm also Diabetic. It's the medication that's ok to use. The pain is somewhat barrable but afraid if I go back I'll maybe do permanent damage to myself? Thanks for writing

Not yet, I feel bad cause I can't give a 2 weeks notice, it defeats the purpose of me not getting hurt? I go for 2 weeks, I'll get Hurt?
Give 2 weeks notice, and do very little for the 2 weeks..don't lift anything heavy, and go to the toilet when you need to go ( what can they do to you, you will already have give your notice) .. but try and get your 2 weeks pay!!

Do they have an HR dept? If so, call them and explain where you are now. This could be a possible "workman's compensation" situation. Tell them and let them relate back to you what they can do...possible get you a much easier position or give their ok on you quitting. Don't remember you saying they told you this job would be physically strenuous in the beginning...just "very busy". If that is the case, I'd also remind them of what you were given as a job description when you were hired.

They just told me that it would be a lot That it's so much that she felt sorry for the workers. Now I see what she's talking about. I wish she had been More Clear? I would have made a different decision?
