Food or Gas

If you shopped at a grocery store that gave redeemable credits toward getting a discount on gasoline or a future food purchase, which would you choose?

I have PC (President's Choice) points card that earns points when I shop in the grocery store and use these points for food. I have a Costco Membership card and this gives me discounts on gas.

Discount on gas! My son lives close to downtown in a very walkable area and buys his groceries from Kroger. One point for every dollar spent and 100 points = $.10 off/gal. I buy Lowe's or Home Depot gift cards there to use for my garden, and there are double points for those gift cards. Sometimes there are triple or quadruple points for them. A month's worth of groceries for his household and gift cards for me usually amount to at least $1/gal off for me.

The local Price Chopper has a deal like that and I always choose the free food option in conjunction with coupons, loss leaders, etc... that help to drive the prices even lower.

I've found that I can buy what little gas I need at better starting prices than the stations participating in the discount program offer.

Some of the stores here offer up to 10p off a litre of petrol / diesel at their own pumps, but not every store sells fuel and it's not worth travelling the extra miles to fill up. Morrisons stores give points which add up to give a £5 voucher and occasionally money off fuel. Again, although I like the stores, there isn't one convenient so I rarely get the chance to use them.

It is such a hassle to try to redeem gas points at the local participating station, I have now opted for the food discount. I eat more food than my car uses gas, now that I practically only use it to deliver meals-on-wheels.
