Doctor made millions on unneeded surgeries

Depend what is meant by unneeded. If you mean not necessary, then those surgeries may be highly recommended to prevent disease or future possible problems and insurance covers that. Such as kidney stone removal. But other surgeries are totally not needed at all, and those I think you include. Surgery for the heart when there is no disease.
Getting tonsils removed for no good reason. When the chances of disease is less than 40%.

That's why you get second opinions and research your condition online. I research any new doctor, specialist, hospital and surgery online. I ask around and see what others think. You can also check out a doctor's reputation online and see how he is rated.

Unless the doctor has already been convicted of a serious crime (as in the above cases), the information available online is very limited & useless due to privacy laws that protect the doctor

Re: "Second Opinions," My dad got second opinions & the first thing the second-opinion doctor did was look at his medical records, so he could chat with the first-opinion doctor & make sure the two opinions weren't very far apart. Which means a "Second Opinion" is usually a live recording of the "First Opinion." My dad's "Second Opinion" doctor sent him a letter, saying "I agree with your other doctor." Big surprise....

I took my dad to another clinic, hoping for a real second opinion. Without submitting his medical records & his insurer (which have his first opinion doctor listed on them), they wanted $15,000.00.

Many people with chronic pain go to neurosurgeons hoping for relief. Who better to scam? May they throw the book at that guy.
They won't. They'll just move him to a different medical facility. "Dateline" followed such doctors & that's exactly what they do. And it doesn't matter how many lives they have destroyed.

Win, I have been on web sites that do list doctors reviews by patients. Also you can check the State Board and see a Doctor's credentials and any complaints filed against him. I was surprised when at a dentist office he started telling me about his former assistant's personal problems. I did not know this dentist personally and decided he was not for me. I checked his reviews online and 2 other patients had posted the same comments I had heard from him. I will check with the State Board anytime I decide to see a different doctor for any formal complaints about him. They are there for patients to be sure of a doctor.

"Yelp" will allow posting of reviews of doctors & dentists by patients. But that may or may not be helpful because there is no way to verify the authenticity of a review or who posted it.
