Houston, we have a problem...

Maybe this isn't the right forum, but I just need to ask... What is the draw of Houston TX (besides the baseball team)? I'm here for the winter with work and so far it just seems like a huge urban sprawl connected by a tangle of overpasses/freeways. Any Houstonians out there can clue me in?

What, exactly, are you looking for? Things to do on the weekend? Places to eat? You should visit NASA while you're there -- it's an interesting place, to say the least. And drive over the causeway to Galveston -- there's lots to see and do there, indoors and out. Houston has a large Asian population, especially Vietnamese, so you can eat your weight in pho, and other noodle delights. Eat at Hugo's some night -- upscale Mexican to die for. Visit the venerable battleship Texas and the San Jacinto monument. Take a long weekend, maybe over Thanksgiving, and visit San Antonio. It's our old, historic city, representing many of the cultures that came together to make Texas. Visit the Shrine of Texas Liberty, the Alamo, and it's sister missions, too.

Yes, it's a modern, sprawling city built on the oil and gas industry and shipping. And we Texans do love our highways. There was a meme on Facebook a while back -- "Houston is officially an hour away from Houston."

Right on Carol. I have stayed mainly because of daughter and my medical needs. People here in my condo complex are friendly and see about each other. Love Galveston, especially with the Strand, the beach when the blue water is present. I am only a mile from Nasa which is a world in its self. Love the different cultures with their customs, food and values!

Its a great city but still retains its small town charm with people looking after each other. I love looking at the sea shells my oldest grand and I found on the beach at Galveston. She was only 3 years old and we kept the most interesting ones. I marked each one with the date we found it with a Sharpie pen. I enjoy the time we had at the beach with her running to me every time she found a different one. I still have those shells and love thinking about those good times with her. She is now graduated and onto bigger things in her life.

CinnamonSugar, you should visit TripAdvisor.com. They have reviews and list the top things to do and places to eat in different cities around the world. They also have forums where you can ask specific questions about various places.

If you are here for the winter, I suggest doing a little traveling on the weekends. Look up the George Ranch. It's west of Houston, and would make a nice day trip. Go to YouTube and search for the Texas Daytripper. The guy who does it is a goofball, but he'll give you lots of ideas on what to see and where to eat in this great state. Also, visit The Woodlands in NW Houston. Urban planning at it's best, IMO. Takes some money to live there, but it's .... well, just go see. You wont know you're in a city.

Man, check out the Museum District, Montrose shopping and restaurants, Phoenicia Specialty Foods (the one on Westheimer), Lakewood Church (great music, interesting sermons) the Zoo. We visit, from Austin, every few months. We really like it.

thanks treeguy, I think part of the problem is the place is so big (what else did I expect from TX? lol) and spread out that it's kind of over whelming. I appreciate all of y'all's suggestions !
