American Family Moved to the UK

awww that sound like he's fallen completely in love with England...and why not, it's for the most part a wonderful country..outside the cities, and he's living on the coast down here in the south, so it's beautiful there too.

I have heard in the past about American public toilets having half doors. I would not want to use those, because I would hate anyone hearing me going to the loo....

I could understand a small crawl space under a toilet door which we do have here too, in case a child gets locked in or an emergency happens..but not a half door.. !!

Once he's here a year I'd like to hear more, I hope he makes another video then...There's quite a lot of videos on youtube of Americans giving their views on the UK but they're mostly students... and not always correct in their assessments , but this guy is spot on with his list of 5.

I wish I could more there, but with all the family, taint gonna happen.............If I had other circumstances, I'd be over in the Lake District in a minute........

l'm not disputing what he's saying, but I think he generalizes too much. The US is like, what, 4000 miles wide, there are ALL kinds of differences and climates and kinds of people and scenery. About the bathroom doors, all you can see is feet, which makes it easier to see right away if the stall is occupied.

I think he does generalise a bit much. I don't think he says where he lives, but from his reference to the South Downs, I would guess Sussex. I lived more or less on the Hampshire / Sussex border and can confirm the beauty of the area, but it is suffering both from 'Urban sprawl' and high prices.

I didn't find the people unfriendly, but they were very reserved. You virtually needed a letter of introduction to say "hello".

Toilet doors - I do agree with him. I never liked the 'half doors' that they seemed to have in the US - well the places I've been. Perhaps we Brits are more keen on privacy.

Capt, in the video, there' are signs for Eastbourne ..so he's on the Sussex coast .

Unfriendly..us ?... no waaaaayyyyyyy 😂

...anyway , of course he's probably generalising, unless he's travelled to most of the lower 48.. but he can only go by what he's known all his life,

..and he's loving have pavements here. as well as us lovely kind people ..( although Eastbourne tends to be a resort for elderly retired folks)..

I didn't know most places in the USA had no pavements, that'll be why we're told hardly anyone walks anywhere...

Never saw half doors in my 75 years!!!
you don't go out past that sprawling Texan ranch.... 😂..in all seriousness tho' I've heard mention of those half toilet doors by Americans from all parts of the states...

Just googled American public toilets, and found this...

Don't you have occupy indicator locks on your toilet doors? :sneaky:

See.....we do have sidewalks, just depends where you live.

LOL..he did say in the video, that the UK has pavements everywhere... ..however he's only been here 2 months and seen a very tiny part of the uk, and while the pavements thing is generally true in all towns and cities , there's many places like out here in the countryside where we have no pavements in most of our roads outside of the roads where housing is...

For example here's the area where I live... ( the road my house is in, has pavements, but at the end of my road are country lanes, with no pavements at all)

Yeah. Your pics are 'typical' of the states for all the travels we've done. Sidewalks are the exception, not the rule. I'm in an outlying Chicago 'burb'. We mostly have sidewalks in town, but that's not true all over town. It's 'typical' in most of the states, where roads were built over 50 years ago, to not have a walk. It's primarily the newer burbs and of course, major cities, to have them.
But hey, Americans don't walk anyway.

I lived in an old neighborhood in the middle of Tucson and it had no sidewalks, this neighborhood was built 14 years ago and it has sidewalks. Another one right next door, old, has no sidewalk. Just in one city alone, you will find instances where that guy is wrong and right about the US. Just in one neighborhood you will find nasty people and very friendly people, and it must also be so in the UK. I've only seen those ''occupied'' indicators on planes. Doctor offices have individual bathrooms, but big places like grocery stores etc. have the ''half doors'' because they have lots more users.

That's actually really interesting that you don't have an '' engaged indicator'' on the toilet stall doors... wonder why
If it's one of the big stores with the half doors, you can see feet inside the stall and know it's occupied, no need for the indicators. As you can see in your post #7, the stalls are small, I am mildly claustrophobic, I would hate a small area fully enclosed.

I have to say I have visited the USA ..different parts and just loved every second I was there --even with the half doors lol'
but I love my country even more ENGLAND ''' if you think abut it we have the biggest cows and bulls
because of the green grass fields .. and its a myth about the rain ALL the time- we go weeks without now

our climate changes like most countrys now' but we love the rain and arrrrn't we lucky compared to OZ
and Africa ---Somalia ect - its a lovely free country to live in and has bad parts like America --out side our cities

are lush fields beautiful oaks -and the prettiest villages and homely pubs to go and have a meal with kids ...

The guy in the video never said where he came from in the US ..?? .. after all, this country is HUGE, and to generalize on everything is just plain SILLY..

To add a balance to the conversation -- how about all the Brits that are in love in the United States, and move here yearly ?
