The Great British Cuppa

When I was young a visitor would be offered a cup of tea. A teapot would be brought out, when the tea had brewed poured into a cup standing on a saucer. Nowadays many guests prefer coffee, or one of the newer type of teas. My husband and I shove a teabag in a mug, we don't have a teapot or cups and saucers, as we never use them. I wrote this poem some years ago for my late mother.

The Great British Cuppa

No matter how you brew your tea,
Breakfast, lunch and supper,
Bone china cup or old tin mug,
There’s nothing like a cuppa.

No excuse is needed,
Breakfast, lunch and supper,
Mother put the kettle on,
We do enjoy our cuppa.

Hatching, matching and dispatching,
Breakfast, lunch and supper,
In sorrow or excitement,
There is comfort in a cuppa.

In time of war we stood alone,
Breakfast, lunch and supper,
But through it all, however bad,
We gained courage from a cuppa.

Served in palace, des res or squat
Breakfast, lunch and supper,
A bridge across the class divide
When quaffing down a cuppa.

The beverage that cheers the heart,
Breakfast, lunch and supper,
Let’s raise a toast in gratitude,
To that Great British Cuppa!

My mother used to drink vast amounts of tea though I never cared much for it. Since I got married (46 years ago), I've never had more than a few cups. I've always preferred coffee, or even drinking chocolate.

Mrs. L likes the flavoured teas - Strawberry & Mango, Orange & Lemon etc... as well as coffee. In winter, we buy "Christmas" teas in Germany.

I don't like flavoured teas...I drink the occasional decaf coffee ( hubs drinks the strongest coffee he can find but never tea )... but I drink tea all day long... never an hor goes by without a cuppa, tea=bag in the mug... nothing more..

My mother and grandmother did the tea-pot..cup and saucer thing, but I barely know anyone who does that these days except in restaurants and tea-rooms

I love the flavoured teas. Plus they don’t stain my teeth like regular caffeinated teas do.
Regular teas I prefer Twinings

Great poem!

I use generic black tea in bags.

It starts out as a pot of hot tea then goes into the fridge and reappears later in the day as iced tea.

The only flavored tea that I use is Bigelow Constant Comment.

I'm overrun with teapots, tea trios, tea caddies, etc...

My latest find was a Ringtons Cathedral tea caddy/biscuit barrel from the 30s., similar to this one.

Some years ago PG Tips made a decent pot of tea, then one day, I noticed that the box had changed and the new box had pictures of monkeys on it. When I opened the box and made a brew....URRRRGH...it was vile. I wrote to Unilever and complained, they replied and insisted that the Master Blender had recently produced this new blend and that it was better, but I and many others I knew wrote back again to Unilever, telling them that they should sack the Master Blender, because PG Tips was now not worthy to be called tea. We also told them that we would never buy their tea again, we even came up with a slogan....'Don't let PG Tips make a monkey out of you.'

After this episode, it became 'urgent' to find another brand of tea, I tried TY-Phoo and stuck with it....well, 'You only get an 'OO' with Ty-Phoo. 😊

Now, onto brewing tea.....I always use a teapot, I have 3 sizes of teapot , a two cuppa for breakfast, a 4 cuppa for when I have a visitor, and a much, much larger one for when I have some serious thinking to do....I use this one most days...😊.

I always use saucers too, and crook up my little finger when I take a swig from my 2 gallon cup.....
